Every once in a while I go back and search #askagent and answer a few questions. So I'm usually late to the game, but I'm around. I'm also open to receiving questions directly if you ever want to reach out and ask something. Within reason, of course.
Sorry to respond so late, but it certainly could hurt to use a comp that creates guilt by association (just said this to another writer). There are so many elements you can use when picking comps -- same genre, same vibes, same arc, same structure, etc. -- that I'm sure you can avoid this somehow.
You want to use comps that are recognizable. If something is so new most will not have seen it yet, it's not as useful as something that will more clearly communicate the vibes of your work. Plus, you don't know if the content will be controversial yet, and guilt by association could hurt some.
π€© AWWW. Someone bought me a coffee! And here I was getting frustrated fighting with technology today and thinking, "This isn't worth it." Thank you! π₯°
Image of a QR code with words "WritingCommunity.ca is a social enterprise. If youβve benefited from my free resources and advice, consider buying me a coffee. No obligation! Iβm happy to help." QR leads to link: https://link.waveapps.com/fj3juq-auwq9a
It always feels icky asking for money, but if you've ever enjoyed the coffee-fueled resources and advice through my website WritingCommunity.ca, consider buying me a coffee so I can keep supporting the #writingcommunity. :-)

I didn't. But it must have been a big day for agent follows in general then. :)
Whoa. Why did 40 people follow me today? What list did I get put on? π
I was referring to withdrawals only. When you withdraw a submission from me, it automatically goes into my archive and I never see it or any related messages. I don't know about any auto-close function. If it exists, I don't use it.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Query Unrequited webinar! All the technology challenges and scrambling that happened in the 24 hours leading up to the moment I turned my camera on all became worth it to hear you all say how valuable the experience was for you. Happy Valentine's! π₯°
Oh! Despite this being personal, feel free to share. I do want/need as many people to register for the webinar as possible. I love the supportive, book-loving writing community here on Bluesky! π₯°
All this to say that, despite being broke & broken-hearted, I can't think of a better way to spend Valentine's than talking about querying and teaching creators to navigate the heart-breaking process with proficiency and grace. I hope you'll join me and we can nurse our broken hearts together. 4/4
that I love. I also love being a literary agent, but it doesn't provide a stable income. Speaking at conferences and teaching workshops is how I make the bonus money I need to afford extras, like bunk beds for the kids, visiting my family out of town, and the like. 3/4
my partner and I have separated. Yep, I'm teaching a love-themed workshop while nursing a broken heart. π
Starting over in my 40's is not easy. I have four kids to raise and can only afford a two-bedroom apartment on my salary. I have a day job with a small nonprofit that covers the basics... 2/4
I'm going to talk about something personal for a sec, which I don't do here very often because I try to keep things bookish, but it relates to my upcoming Valentine's Day webinar. It's a bit ironic, but when I started planning Query Unrequited, my life was in a very different place. Now... 1/4

Just 10 days until Query Unrequited. If you're trying to land an agent, this workshop is for you! I'll be talking about what I look for in a query, and using real life examples (with permission). Email info@ if you haven't already. First I need to gather the names of all those whose queries I will use, then make sure I can find the original queries and that they represent a variety of passes, then I'll email you more info (or questions if needed).
Maybe you can transfer your registration to a friend and they can pay you back? Due to exchange rates and merchant fees, full refunds are darn near impossible.
Can I use your query? π
Given no one has offered yet, then I'm willing to modify the concept. Email me and we'll see.

If you've received a query rejection from me, you now have the opportunity to get live, detailed feedback. Check out Query Unrequited on WritingCommunity.ca! writingcommunity.ca/2085-2/
Well, I have to have passed on your query, so it wouldn't be ideal to query me with the sole goal of being rejected. π¬
Is anyone who queried me willing to partner with me on an upcoming workshop where I would explain to writers in attendance for educational purposes why I passed on your query? It would be gentle, constructive criticism, and you could attend the workshop for free. Email me at info@writingcommunity.ca
My concern is I specifically said in the email, "You haven't been added to any list. This is the only email you'll get from me on this subject. If you don't want to hear from me again, do nothing." π
Oh dear...no wonder registrations are so low. π
Oh no!
#amquerying #writers: Did you ever wonder what results in an βauto-rejectβ on your query? SPOILER ALERT: It's not typos. Here are the most common reasons: writingcommunity.ca/queryhacker-...
