Excited to share that our paper "Trapped in Declining Occupations: Barriers to Worker Mobility in a Changing Economy" has been accepted at Science Advances.
Using U.S. Occupational Outlook Handbook data (2000-2020), we examine how occupational restructuring affects worker mobility.
This article is dedicated to the millions of Chinese families navigating difficult choices between migration and care, and to those who stay present in different ways for the children.
The topic is personal. I grew up in my grandpa's village home in rural Guangdong while my father worked in the city—seeing him once a week was normal. Thanks to my mother and grandpa's constant presence, I rarely felt the disruption. But the data shows not all kids are that fortunate.
This actually grew out of my second-year paper. Big shoutout to my thesis committee, Emily Hannum, Xi Song, and Jere Behrman.
