An advertisement for electric lighting with a black and white photograph of a cat on the top half of the page. The tagline is "Cats see well in the dark...children can't...help your child to avoid eyestrain giving her better light."
A vintage ad from the back of a 1936 school yearbook for Caturday...

Line drawing of fish feeding by Anne Yeats.

Utterly charmed by the 'Tails from the Archives' exhibition in the National Gallery Ireland, in particular the fluid line drawings of Anne Yeats.

A ladybird is sitting on the middle of a leaf on a raspberry bush
Hurray! I saw a ladybird on the raspberry bush this afternoon. There are SO MANY of aphids for it to eat, hoping to see many more!

This morning, I saw not one, not two, but THREE foxes playing at the end of my suburban garden. A mother and two cubs, I think.
The cat and I watched them from the window. I've seen glimpses of foxes at night in the garden before, but never a whole family π¦

Ruins of medieval church, Ballyboughal County Dublin.
Bringing the boys to a Saturday GAA match in Ballyboughal led to me wandering around the peaceful ruins of this medieval church and graveyard surrounded by yew trees and covered in ivy.

I love that the artist has given the angel wings that look to be modelled on a real bird's wings - I wonder if anyone would recognise a specific bird or if it is an imaginative interpretation π€ ?

I loved them - a mix of quick sketches and more finished work, all felt very fresh and immediate with a wonderful sense of movement and light. Here's a snap of a more detailed painting, closer in tone, I think, to some of the works in oil.

Detail of a tiny cat featured at the bottom of an early 16th-century painting called Scenes from the Life of St Augustine.
Bonus cat picture - unexpected animals in paintings are a subgenre I very much enjoy.

Watercolour painting (mid 1820s) by J.M.W. Turner that shows a seascape with dramatic purple clouds in the sky on the lefthand side.
Detail of a 15th century painting by NicolΓ‘s FrancΓ©s showing St Jerome removing a third from a lions paw. St Herome I'd on the left and looks very calm, the lion is on the right and being super dramatic.
Detail of a 15th century painting called The Taking of a Pisa by an unknown Florentine artist. The foreground shows a child carrying a lance on the right hand side followed by a dog. The child is probably a page or squire bringing supplies to a knight - there are many armoured men on horses behind them.
Detail of a woman dancing from a 16th-century painting called Peasant Wedding by Pieter Brueghel the Younger. The woman is turned sideways to the viewer, facing left, and most of her face is hidden by her white headdress. She has her hands on her hips, and it looks like she is mid hop and step. I feel like she is having a good time.
I popped into @nationalgalleryirl.bsky.social today to catch the Turner watercolours before the end of January. Visited some old favourites while I was there.

Image shows an expanse of grass in the foreground, some picnic benches in the middle, and a man made structure that might be a water tower behind some trees.
Image shows a walking trail through some tall trees, the remains of a metal gate and fence are visible in the foreground.
Image shows Ashtown Castle, a 17th-century tower house.
Image shows a tabby cat sitting on a concrete block in front of a wooden fence.
Sunny and Springy this morning in the Phoenix Park visitor centre - I love the mix of different layers of history and nature in the grounds. Also met a cool cat outside the cafe.

Image shows a spider on a white skirting board. The spider looks disappointingly smaller in the photo than it did in real life.
It's so hard to get a good photograph of a spider! This is genuinely one of the biggest spiders I've ever seen in my house, but it doesn't look half as menacing in a photo as it did in real life.

Image of Dublin Harbour taken from Clontarf. It shows the sea and a blue sky with clouds. In the distance, on the left side, a strip of land with some buildings is visible along the horizon line.
The cobwebs of 2024 have been well and truly swept away by a walk along the sea and out to Bull Island. A glorious morning and afternoon in Dubli city, sunny, crisp, and cold enough to need a hat and mittens!
