A photo of the Chicago skyline at night with a tangle of bright lighting lignite gap the night sky during a thunderstorm
Boom! Had a great ight show over the skyline tonight. Hereβs my first big lightning shot of the season.
This is a 2-frame composite. Best as I can tell, two large, branching bolts struck the eastern antenna mast of the Hancock. #wxsky #ilwx

a macros photo of a hailstone on the ground. multiple rings can be seen biting the stone showing where ice had grown
This was about 3/4." hail in Chicago. Thought the accretion rings in this split hailstone were pretty neat.
Had to do some sharpening because I was taking this macro shot quickly while trying to avoid getting pelted.

I can't believe I've only eaten 2 hotdogs so far this year
Photograph of a dramatic pancake-stack layered supercell thunderstorm with multiple bright lightning bolts striking the surface around the impressive towering updraft looming over a rural landscape. In contrast to the illuminated cloud structure, a deep blue starry night sky is visible on the left.
The first photo I captured of the 9-23-23 Ada, OK supercell (after a few test shots). Yes, all three lightning strikes were captured in a single image! From my distant vantage point, this intricately-structured supercell gracefully danced under a sky full of stars with unmatched beauty. #Photography
THESE ARE NOT AURORAS: Montana is a good place to see auroras, so on Feb 17th when Jane Horton of Helena MT saw towering lights in the night sky. "Are these auroras?" Not exactly. These are light pillars caused by city lights shining into freezing air. spaceweather.com/images2026/2...

The Ranger Road Fire in Oklahoma burns brightly at night among city lights.
Imagery captured early this morning by NOAA-20.
Redownloaded Duolingo recently and my doomscrolling is greatly reduced. Picked back up the Spanish and Korean lessons, and added Irish and Arabic to the mix.
Strong winds caused the Ranger Road and Stevens fires to experience rapid growth across the Oklahoma panhandle and into southern Kansas, seen this afternoon by the JPSS weather satellites.
The Ranger Road Fire, the larger of the two wildfires, burned over 15,000 acres today.

It's very likely that many (most?) strong cold-season East Coast cyclones produce waterspout outbreaks over the Gulf Stream. No doubt that this was a mesocyclonic tornado.
This happened 40 years ago today.
please move with compassion in how you speak with others as you see distressing information. bluesky has a tendency when news breaks like this to become an intolerable space where people yell at those trying to help them and be there. we need to hold space for community even as weβre in danger.
