- The reasons behind limited global success of CCP state media (most notably CGTN) so far, compared to AlJazeera or RT: high degree of self-censorship due to the ever-stronger repression of press freedom under Xi Jinping ; (1/2)
- Noting the increasing alignment with Russian narratives in CCP media, especially since the start of the Ukraine war
- The success of “content sharing” with local news agencies (to replace Western sources such as AP and Reuters)
- AlJazeera and RT are discussed as, from the CCP's perspective, models of authoritarian state-backed media that succeeded in becoming popular on a global scale
- The differences between soft and sharp power are explored and it is discussed how the CCP increasingly relies on sharp power tools apart from soft power
- The book has a special focus on Southeast Asia and Taiwan, where, according to the author, the CCP has first started testing its media influence approaches
