I spent 20 years teaching media literacy, and:

1) I'm damn glad I'm not teaching anymore, because it would be soul-crushing. But:

2) It already is, because just looking around makes me feel that it was all a complete waste of time.

It's so fucking depressing.

Shirt from the ATB Publishing shop on TeePublic, which is linked in the post. It's a gray shirt with blue text on it that says, "PROCEDURE: 033-03" in the exact font on the computer in the movie Logan's Run. A thumbnail image has been added at the bottom to show Logan with his hand raised and the red light on his palm lit up after the aforementioned procedure aged him forward intentionally.

Feel like the state of the world is aging you at an unnaturally rapid pace?

We've got a shirt for that: www.teepublic.com/t-shirt/4965...

Every time Cameron says he's "still" going to make another AVATAR, it just sounds like a threat. No one asked, Jim.

GenAI continues to be garbage tech. Nothing but errors and hallucinations and flattery, reducing everything to the stupidest possible iteration of itself. All it does it lie to you. Even if it were not ethically objectionable it is a waste of time and cannot do the job as advertised. Don't use it.

Never heard of this one, so I'm adding it to the ol' Letterboxd watchlist. :)

Time and again, companies make it clear they think they're owed access to us. They think it's their right to take our art, our writing, our photos, our actual identities, and use them for whatever purpose they want (including forcing AI features built on that theft into software against our wishes).

One of the @rifftrax.com lines that always makes us laugh, delivered by @billcorbett.bsky.social in "Truck Song:"

"Thank you, Simon and Truckfunkel."

Golden Age Wonder Woman panel as with a series of steps behind them, our heroine stands next to a woman whose hands are bound in cuffs. Several men on their knees bow to the women. Narration: "The Incas acclaim WONDER WOMAN as sun goddess."
The dudes in unison: "Hail, holy daughter of the sun! Thou art our long promised divine woman - goddess of light!"
Watching this spectacle Wonder Woman thinks, "Oh! Oh! This has possibilities!"

From the sequel’s Wikipedia page: β€œGenerative AI was used for planning, visualization, and visual effects.” So unfortunately it’s nothing to get excited about or see or acknowledge as even existing.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if HORROR OF PARTY BEACH fell into a giant novelty blender with BLOOD WATERS OF DR. Z?

If so, then STING OF DEATH may just be the perfect film for you!

(Also, hi! We should be friends.)

Both X-FILES volumes from ATB Publishing are still on sale through tomorrow! Incidentally, the essay I wrote about "Eve" is fairly topical for International Women's Day.

A former colleague suggested to me in actual seriousness that I apply to one of those AI training jobs that all the boards are spammed with. Sent me a link like she was doing me a favor.

I lost it and told her I'd rather starve and no surprise we haven't spoken since.

It’s only a big β€œconversation” when you act like it has to be?

With our kids, the one sort of tough part was telling them that some in the world still disapprove of gay people. But that those prejudiced people are wrong.

Otherwise no big deal.

Now, talking with them about Death - THAT was hard.

Rod Serling is probably the coolest guy of the 20th century. Looked cool, sounded cool, fought Nazis, hated John Wayne, wrote the screenplay for Planet of the Apes. Honestly dunks all the hell over any male influencer guy.
