From what I do know, the field is rendered from one side to another, loaded/unloaded from the tiny buffer a PS1 had for memory. I think the approach taken by modders is to create a mask later above the game. Better explanation tion via this site I think www.reshdp.com/re2/

Alot of PS1 era pre rendered backgrounds are rendered like this. The original efforts to "fix" RE2 demonstrated this, showing seams when the individual tiles were up-rezzed. You might do well be seeing what the team behind the seamless HD mod did via dolphin.
