I think what's selling me on Badlands most so-far is that there's a classic sci-fi universal translator in play, but it's only letting the audience actually hear the human character speak English. The Yautja is still speaking Yautjaese with subtitles the entire time.

I'm 30 minutes in and absolutely adoring it! It's beautiful, the characters are compelling from the get-go, there's clearly a LOT of detail and effort put into the worldbuilding, my little nerd brain is purring like a cat lying in a sunbeam.

20 straight minutes and there's not a single human face in this movie, nor a single word of human language. But the audience knows exactly who is who and what's going on and what the objectives are.

Drowning my miseries for the night by finally watching Predator Badlands and it's opening with a whole Ton of what I've wanted to see for years: An interpersonal drama with non-human characters speaking in their native non-human tongue. Seriously that's like catnip for me, we basically never see it.
