Photograph of a risoprint of sycamore leaves. Many yellow leaves are aranged around a dark central leaf. On the most bottom left leaf the words 'flat blank hands halt it all' are splayed along each lobe of the leaf. Top left text reads: Plant poems. Bottom right text reads: Steph Morris (c)
Our latest word & image feature is three Plant Poems by @herr-morris.bsky.social. Each is a playful, flamboyant interpretation which provokes us to look at common foliage at a slant.

I never thought Iβd be cheering on a former Tory Cabinet minister.
But hereβs to the moral clarity, courage and leadership of @kitmalthouse.bsky.social.

META BOOK THIEVES - They Must Do The Write Thing
The Society of Authors are protesting Metaβs HQ today
This image shows illustrations of authors holding placards saying βmake it fairβ and βdo the write thingβ
Today UK authors are protesting against Meta for stealing our work to train their AI model. Authors earn an average of Β£7000 per year, we are not rich, and yet a trillion dollar company decided it didnβt want to license our work fairly as it was βtoo expensiveβ
Theft is not a valid alternative.

Translators have been the canaries in the AI coalmine for a couple of years now and we are already losing work to these systems. Having existing work used to train them without permission or compensation just adds insult to injury.

Society of Authors image #DoTheWriteThing and protect authors' livelihoods from the unlicensed use of their work in AI Training #MetaBookThieves. At the bottom are a diverse bunch of people waving placards reading #BookThieves, Make It Fair, Do the Write Thing and Compensation for Creators
@bengoldsborough.bsky.social Like pretty much all my writer and translator friends and colleagues, Meta have used pirated copies of my work to train their AI systems. Iβll be asking META to #DoTheWriteThing on Thursday 3 April. #metabookthieves #MakeItFair

My poetry pamphlet IN RETAIL (@arachnepress.bsky.social) has been used to train Metaβs Al without mine or my publisherβs permission or with due regard to copyright. Iβm not alone, there are 1000s of writers whoβs work has been stolen. Solidarity with @societyofauthors.bsky.social!

Imagine if all those who are silent about the terrible evil being committed in Gaza spoke up | Owen Jones
No crime in history has been so well documented by its victims. And yet inaction and censorship reign, says Guardian columnist Owen Jones
In every atrocity in history, the silent are always principal players.
Those who remain silent over Israel's genocide are enabling it to continue.
Their cowardice is paid in the blood of thousands of innocent Palestinians.
