I’ve had great success using Perusall for collaborative annotations. Students were mixed in liking/disliking it, but there was consensus about its positive impact.

Can we do assessment differently, in ways that increase access, support greater inclusion, improve learning outcomes, and enhance the experience of teaching and learning?
Wide-eyed woman stares off screen. Frame from Cemetery of Splendor.
My piece draws from an ungraded assignment for a course on International Cinema at @comatbu.bsky.social, for which I asked students to curate a film festival that challenged traditional film canons.
Right on cue, as I submit final grades: check out JCMS teaching dossier on ungrading practices in film/media courses.

A trama conta a história de amadurecimento de Janaína (Mayara Santos), uma garota negra de 18 anos que foi criada pela mãe e pela avó na periferia do Recife. 🇧🇷
Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece’s book is a must.

Projector screen in classroom with text and images of Bruno Guaraná and Lynn Spigel
Taught @brunoguarana.bsky.social 's interview with Lynn Spigel from @filmquarterly.bsky.social again yesterday. What a great, teachable text that gives students new ways to think about TV history! Also a fine example of the academic interview genre.

I love MFA Boston's relatively new Center for Netherlandish Art because they don't shy away from the history of Dutch slavery and colonialism.
For example, the gallery of still-lifes has map & ledgers of the Atlantic trade routes and ugly truth of the sweets and "exotic" fruits in the paintings.
What a line-up!
I'm very excited to share that my department at USC is hosting a new conference this summer - The Hollywood Conference! Please spread the word and come join us in LA (the obviously spot for this) next July. www.thehollywoodconference.com/cfp
