“Goodbye, Mittens,” sobs Ellie. “You were the best kitty in the whole – sniff – wide – sniffle – world.”
I bend and engulf Ellie’s frail body in a hug, crying tears onto her flowery top. Tears, not for Mittens, but for us: unless we get a miracle, this grief is nothing compared with what’s to come.
“I’m sorry I stole the money, but everyone was going to the Christmas fair and...”
“We don’t have to follow everyone else, though, do we?” Mother spat.
She means Peter. I don’t know why she hates him so much. Without him, I’d have been in more trouble than she could ever imagine.
