I've been out knocking on doors with the amazing @janetphorner.bsky.social I already knew how effective she is in the council chamber, and I've come to see how hard she works for her constituency. She would make a brilliant representative for Dublin Central!

Research is not a โ€˜gig economyโ€™
Green Party responds to Trinity funding loss

Following the announcement that up to 150 research positions at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) are at risk, the Green Party has called for a fundamental overhaul of the Governmentโ€™s approach to research funding.

Speaking on the immediate uncertainty facing researchers in Ireland, Green Party Spokesperson for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and Councillor for Stillorgan, Eva Dowling said:

โ€œResearch should not be treated like a โ€˜gig economyโ€™. The situation at Trinity College Dublin is the direct result of a fundamental flaw in how the Government treats research, science and innovation. Successive ministers have prioritised short-term 'ribbon-cutting' exercises over building a robust, world-class research ecosystem.

I have written to the Minister asking that he engage with the affected research staff, universities and unions urgently. The ongoing uncertainty in the science community is unacceptable. โ€

Green Party Leader Roderic Oโ€™Gorman TD added:

โ€œIreland punches above its weight when it comes to excellence in research but we cannot build a sustainable knowledge economy on a precarious funding model.

Countries we admire like Denmark and Switzerland have built thriving indigenous research, startup and enterprise sectors with: strong doctoral pipelines; deep public-private collaboration; and a national commitment to translating research into home-grown companies. To make this possible we need a robust, sustainable long-term commitment to funding research across all disciplines, making research a viable career path for graduates in Ireland.โ€

The additional cost of ONE fossil fuel price spike on the scale of 2022 = the ENTIRE COST of Net Zero by 2050. We get precisely nothing in return for the first cost, and a whole new, more secure and cheaper energy system from the second one.

The last thing the North Inner City needs is more casinos preying on our communities. A casino that is already in breach of their planning conditions should definitely not be allowed to expand further into a residential area.

Heating oil prices in the UK have trebled in a week. 2 million homes, no price cap protection, no warning.

Heat pumps + solar are multiple times more efficient, donโ€™t require an oil tank and oil deliveries and are an insurance against such frightening price spikes.

UK must stockpile food in readiness for climate shocks or war, expert warns Prof Tim Lang says country produces far less food than it needs to feed population and is particularly vulnerable

Meanwhile, Irish agriculture system entirely incapable of meeting fundamental food needs of our population, with its export-based model predicated on massive fertiliser, animal feed imports.

We are shockingly vulnerable yet nobody is even talking about it.
