John Shirley's guide to wrecking your career in science fiction
John Shirley tells all: feuds, drugs, punk rock, and the road from Harlan Ellison's wrath to redemption.
Once more for this because I wish I'd mentioned my newest novels, Gunmetal Mountain (won the Spur Award), Blood in Sweet River, The Silver Revolver.

That's Noem, Lewandowski, and Bovino out.
Wannabe fascists, perhaps, but you are not living in a fascist country. Public pressure, embarassment, legislative opposition - all of them helped to turf these folks. That's what I mean by "the levers of democracy still work and you should use them."

What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.

History will remember Will Stancil as a giant who recognised the moment America was living through, and rose up to challenge it, and history will not remember a single LARPing American Communist at all. They won't even be a footnote in the story.

Amazon Change Means Wishlists Might Expose Your Address
Amazon is allowing gift senders to choose items from third-party sellers, which could open recipients up to new privacy risks.
A planned change to Amazon means that if people buy items on your wishlist, it could expose your address. Definitely a threat to people who have public wishlists.

Blind refugee abandoned by Border Patrol dies in Buffalo.
A nearly blind refugee abandoned by Border Patrol miles from his home dies in Buffalo after having been missing for nearly a week.
"Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a nearly blind refugee from Burma who Border Patrol agents dropped off at a doughnut shop Thursday and left to find his way home, 5 miles away, has been found dead."
To read the words is to damn all involved, from Trump on down.

I think the gutting of USAID is probably the worst American-caused tragedy since the invasion of Iraq. Obviously the death toll will be much higher. I just canβt get over it. They were celebrating the gutting of one of the most efficient life-saving organizations like they had won the Super Bowl.

βWe will launch during a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns,β according to the document from Metaβs Reality Labs, which works on hardware including smart glasses.

Ian McKellen performs speech about immigrants by Shakespeare from Thomas More (23/4/2016)
YouTube video by TFotF
This is great. Turns out Shakespeare wrote some material in collaboration with another playwright for "Thomas Moore" and here's a speech Billy S wrote, performed by Ian "Gandalf" Mckellen, who's in fact a great Shakespearean actor - and it's Shakespeare taking down anti-immigrant lunacy. Brilliant!

I'd like to add that like in all industries, when we stop understanding how our tools work, we become entirely dependent on the corporate entities that own the mold. We are trading the ability to build and repair for the convenience of being permanent tenants in someone else's infrastructure/subs.
