Global Health at A Crossroads Part I Welcome to Cambridge Core

I just finished reading the Global Health Symposium in the American Journal of International Law. If you are interested in this field, particularly in the recent amendments to the International Health Regulations, the essays in this series are highly recommended.

Last night, after 65+ open letters by Iranian-Germans urged Germanyโ€™s Federal Public Prosecutor to investigate the regimeโ€™s brutality against peaceful protesters, I spoke to WDR (Cologne, in Persian) explaining the legal basis, consequences & importance of such an investigation.

Applicants spend days preparing applications; time that could go into research and writing. At a minimum, institutions can send a simple notification about the outcome.

When I Think of Iran I Think of Light Amid Iranโ€™s crackdown, women and writers defy censorship and violence for freedom & change, writes the author of 'Reading Lolita in Tehran.'

"For me, as for millions of Iranians, this struggle is not political. It is existential. The first thing the Islamic Republic did, like any totalitarian system, was take away our right to live."

Once again, the #Islamic_Republic of Iran has shut down the internet amid lawful and legitimate protests.

This has long been the regimeโ€™s tactic: to suppress information, evade international scrutiny, and kill protesters with impunity.

Today I discussed the @echr.coe.int approach to COVID-19 cases at @kuleuvenuniversity.bsky.social, suggesting ways the proportionality test under the International Health Regulations could better protect the rule of law in pandemic cases.

Thanks to all organisers and participants!

Racial Bias in Academia: An Audit Experiment Revealing Disparities in Faculty Responses to Prospective Students | International Journal of Education Policy and Leadership

Very interesting:
The article's results "show significantly different responses from faculty depending on the student's name and association with a racialised group."

This might also apply to applications for postdocs, grants, lectureships, and similar opportunities

Anyone whoโ€™s worked on German constitutional law knows how hard it is to find good resources in English. Recently, I came across a newly published edited volume by many of Germanyโ€™s leading scholars; a great resource to get familiar with German constitutional law.

Not providing feedback on applications is very unfair.

We always say people should learn from their mistakes, but if someone doesn't know what the mistake is, how can they learn from it?

I hate IRIB. It's a propaganda machine of the Iranian Authoritatian Regime

BUT according to the Geneva Conventions:

"The bombing of a television station, simply because it is being used for the purposes of propaganda, cannot be condoned. It is a civilian objectโ€

If you have a colleague or student from Iran or Israel, despite your political standing, please reach out to them and ask them how they are doing.

It is a tough time for civilians, particularly those far from their loved ones.

El Aroud and Soughir v. Glad to share my post on Strasbourg Observers, where I examine the ECtHR's ruling in El Aroud and Soughir v. Belgium. I argue that citizenship revocation in counter-terrorism is a punitive act with serious human rights consequences.

I had the pleasure of speaking at the @wzb.bsky.social on โ€œCounter-Terrorism and Citizenship Revocation.โ€
In my talk, I examined the approach of the European Court of Human Rights, focusing on whether the revocation of citizenship of terrorists is an administrative measure or a criminal punishment.

I joined Dr. Mahnaz Bayat Komitakiโ€™s Public Law class, talking about the State of Emergency and Rule of Law. Such a rewarding experience!
