JUST IN: Democrats flip a seat in the New Hampshire state House.
Dem Bobbi Boudman has won today’s special election, NHJournal reports.
(Boudman was the Dem nominee in 2024 & lost by 14%; Trump won here by 9%.)
This is Dems’ third legislative flip so far this year, after Texas and Arkansas.

If you listen carefully to the White House press secretary, her job, day and day out, is to look at you in the eye and say: "He is not insane. It all makes perfect sense."

I spent 45 minutes trying and failing to convince a full bird Colonel with multiple Afghanistan and Iraq deployments that Afghanistan is not an Arabic speaking country. I was helped in this discussion (to no avail) by two Afghan interpreters who were more polite than I was.

1/ Has life expectancy fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic? In a new pre-print, we find that 31 of 34 high-income countries had still not returned to their expected life expectancy trajectories five years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.6... #demography

3/ We show that this assumption is premature. Extending life expectancy estimates through 2024 for 34 high-income countries, we find that five years after the pandemic’s onset, 31 countries remain below their expected trajectories as projected by Lee-Carter forecasts.

It feels like Spring 2020. Informed people saw the Covid virus coming. I warned students Japan had closed its schools & that this was possible in the US. We bought groceries for a possible lock down while the clerk looked at us like we were crazy. Then over spring break the whole world changed.

The worst cabinet in American history
And it's not even close.
"In his second term, Trump knew exactly what he wanted and who could give it to him. In many cases, that meant not just a weak choice but literally the worst possible choice, the person guaranteed to do maximal harm. In short, we have never seen quite this collection of clowns, cranks, and crooks."

‘Hey’ came before ‘hi,’ and ‘hi' came before ‘hello.’
‘Hi’ is most likely a variant of ‘hey.’
‘Hello’ is not related to either.
Goodbye.

there's this weird tendency to see Palestine as a load-bearing part of global systems of power or capital, rather than a marginalized population brutally oppressed by a fairly small state. A mirror image of the "Israel is the defender of the West' stuff.

I think this story is a really good example for people to look at when it comes to understanding bias at NYT. It's not that the reporter, Dana Rubinstein, says anything outright false. But the framing, word choices, etc., add up to an unprofessional and biased account.

"One question asked during the Q&A involved CNN, with Ellison responding that it was essential that new divisions maintain editorial independence. He also referred to CBS News having editorial independence as it is being restructured under Free Press editor Bari Weiss and TV veteran Tom Cibrowski."
I still think it's funny (and telling) that they think it assuages anybody's fear about CNN's editorial independence to tell them to look at what's happening under Bari Weiss at CBS News
