The Founders of Maine’s First Firefighter Union Struggled with PTSD & Terminal Illnesses Due to Their Work
Ladder 6, Portland, 1924. Credit: Maine Historical Society
After the first firefighter union in Maine dissolved in 1921, its officers either died or left the fire service due to struggles with PTSD. Their stories serve as a clear example of why they needed the rights and protections that a union could have provided.

"We live in Maine. The idea is that we’re all neighbors and in it together. Immigrants are our union brothers & sisters. We all work side by side with these folks & we’ve come to know them & love them & all of a sudden they’re in fear of coming to work. That should have an effect on all of us."

Union Carpenter Derek Ellis of Skowhegan was down the street from his job site in Portland when he saw ICE agents shout at a woman to "get the hell out" of her car. As they tore her out of her car, she screamed "I'm a US citizen! I'm a citizen!" as her small child in a carseat cried hysterically.

Firefighter/paramedics rely on absentee voting because they often work long shifts on Election Day and can't get out of work to vote. Question 1 on the November ballot would restrict our ability to vote absentee. VOTE NO ON 1! #SaveMaineAbsenteeVoting
