This also means - per my reporting - that Anthropic spent $2.66bn (so three quarters of its LIFETIME compute) on AWS between Jan and Sep 2025. These costs came to me through AWS sources and I stand by them fully, as they are direct measured costs vs. investor deck slop.

I think the truth is that Anthropic likely misled reporters about its previous years’ revenues through deceptive leaks. I would guess 2025’s revenues were lower than $4.5bn and the majority of the remaining $500m is from 2026. This is an absolute scandal.
The inference costs are in addition to costs from training the models. Anthropic last month expected its costs for training its AI models for 2025 to be roughly $4.1 billion, up roughly 5% from its summer projections. OpenAI, meanwhile, expected to spend $9.4 billion on compute for training its Al models last year.
Reports had previously said Anthropic made $4.5bn in 2025 on $2.79bn of inference and $4.1bn of training.
This would mean it made $500m total in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026 so far combined.

In a field as competitive as frontier AI, this feedback loop if allowed to persist could result in harm well beyond the immediate consequences of the government's actions. Training and serving frontier-level models like Claude requires extraordinary computational resources. Anthropic has already spent over $10 billion on model training and inference (serving the model to end users) and expects to spend many billions more in the coming years. Although the company has generated substantial revenue since entering the commercial market exceeding $5 billion to date—it has nonetheless had to raise more than $60 billion in outside capital to fund its operations. Anthropic has raised this capital by issuing investors equity stakes in the company.
Based on their lawsuit filed against the DoD, Anthropic appears to be admitting that reports about its revenue and costs are fake, saying its revenue to date “exceeds $5bn” and training/inference “over $10bn.” Previous reports said $4.5bn.
