A handwritten manuscript listing gardening expenses

A handwritten manuscript listing gardening expenses

Post image Post image

One of the most important parts of the medieval Abbey was College Garden, which was used to grow food and medicinal herbs and was home to a fishpond and beehives. The gardener's expenses are recorded in these handwritten accounts in our archive.

A grand Georgian-era room featuring an ornate plasterwork ceiling with green and white decorative panels, a central medallion, and intricate scrollwork. The walls are covered in detailed chinoiserie wallpaper depicting trees, flowers, and birds in greens, pinks, and reds. The wide-plank hardwood floor is largely empty, with a small grouping of elegant wooden chairs with cream upholstered seats placed symmetrically around the room. A white marble fireplace with a mirror above it sits centrally on the far wall, flanked by period furniture including a bureau and a decorated cabinet. Tall sash windows on either side flood the room with natural light, revealing trees outside.

50 years ago this was Ealing Central Library. Long before that it was where Sir John Soane lived. Now the house has been restored and has an art gallery attached.

All that's left of the shrine of St Margaret of Scotland in the grounds of Dunfermline Abbey. The wooden shrine stood on this base of Frosterley marble. It was enclosed within a chapel, both destroyed at the Reformation.

End of today's walk at Beddgelert in the Snowdonia National Park, Wales and the river Glaslyn. A quick visit to Gelets grave(the village is named after the dog), the faithful dog of Prince Llywelyn and it seemed appropriate. Mine are now both asleep.

Whimpwell Bay takes its name from the medieval village of Whimpwell, once standing on this stretch of coast. The settlement was abandoned centuries ago and the sea later claimed the site, leaving only its name on the map and these fast-retreating dunes as a reminder. #aerial
