"Drew Gummerson is one of the funniest writers around - the PG Wodehouse of the flophouse. Seven Nights at the Flamingo Hotel is a riot. A crazy pink tribute - the most under of underdogs." RΓ³nΓ‘n Hession, author of Leonard and Hungry Paul Ω¨Ω Ω¨ "A gut-wrenching masterpiece of booze-sodden tragicomedy and a genuine cult classic. Drew Gummerson is an incredibly skilful and versatile writer, coming across in Seven Nights at the Flamingo Hotel like the ghost of Charles Bukowski with a rainbow flag hanging out of his arse pocket." Stu Hennigan, author of Ghost Signs "Probably the most original, exciting and creatively invigorating book I've read this year - like On The Buses meets lain Banks." βMy lord, autumn soon merges in winter, but the spring has all the seasons before. The full-blown rose is nearer withering than the bud. The faint morn is a blossom: the crimson sunset the flower.β Chapter 50, Mardi. #Melvillemonday #naturesky #bloomsky #spring #classiclit
Manta - the devil's ray
But look! fathoms down in the sea; where ever saw you a phantom like that? An enormous crescent with antlers and a Delta of mouths. Slowly it sinks, and is seen no more.
Doctor Faust saw the devil; but you have seen the "Devil Fish."

βBeing once pursued by a whale which he had wounded, he parried the assault for some time with a lance; but the furious monster at length rushed on the boat; himself and comrades only being preserved by leaping into the water when they saw the onset was inevitable.β

"There seems no reason why patriotism and narrowness should go together, or why intellectual impartiality should be confounded with political trimming, or why serviceable truth should keep cloistered because not partisan."
- Melville, c. 1866
Even many of the more considerate and industrious of the citizens . . . yielded to the ascendancy of curiosity over interest, and strayed from their shops, and their work-yards to gaze upon the noble spectacle of a moving ship.

The cabin; by the stern windows;
Ahab sitting alone, and gazing out.
I leave a white and turbid wake; pale waters, paler cheeks, where'er I sail. The envious billows sidelong swell to whelm my track; let them; but first I pass.

Whaleboat -Length: 28-30; length can vary Beam: 6'3" Whaleboats were an essential piece of equipment for a ship like the Charles W. Morgan. When a whale was spotted, the whaleboats would be lowered into the water, and a crew of six people would climb down into each boat. The crew would row towards the whale with five long oars. The harpooner would row in the bow, or front, of the boat, ready to dart a harpoon into the whale. An officer would be in the back or stern, with the steering oar. Rowing was the main form of propulsion, but these whaleboats also have a mast and rig for sailing. These whaleboats are part of a fleet that was built for the Charles W. Morgan's 38th Voyage in 2014. Each one was built by a different boatbuilding organization, which is why each one is slightly different. Our whaleboats are currently used to teach rowing and sailing to the public. From the signage at Mystic Seaport, USA. On site for Oceanic Melville 2025, stood here, captured this image.
βAs a general thing, therefore, you must first get to a whale, before any pitchpoling comes into play.β
