5/ The playbook is predictable โ and therefore counterable. Protect independent media, safeguard courts, monitor how mainstream parties adopt far-right framings, and build democratic counter-narratives. Discourse is an early-warning signal. By the time policies change, it's already too late.
4/ The key insight isn't about extreme statements. It's about REPETITION. Mid-range attacks on judicial independence, press freedom, and pluralism, deployed constantly across hundreds of interviews, normalise illiberalism without anyone sounding the alarm.
3/ Spain shows a clear gradient: Vox is the most illiberal, the centre-right partially accommodates, the left is more liberal. Argentina surprises: far right and left converge at similarly high illiberal levels, while the centre-right is the most moderate.
2/ We analysed 255 elite interviews and 2,572 responses from political leaders across the ideological spectrum in Spain and Argentina, coded with LLMs. The finding: ~85โ90% of illiberal rhetoric targets courts, media, and political opponents โ not elections or citizenship rights.
1/ ๐งต Can language erode a democracy before a single law changes? In our new report "Tracing Illiberal Talk," Hugo Marcos-Marnรฉ and I dig into how far-right rhetoric undermines democratic institutions โ long before policies shift. Part of a broader research project we're developing together.
