Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women.
More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications.
I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.
😅😂 At least, you are one of the few men aware of it.
This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

Trans people have long warned that most of the victims of anti-trans laws and policies would be cis women and girls who don't have the "right look."
1942 or 1943 black and white photo of three young Germans sitting near trees in what appears to be a park: a young man in a military uniform, a dark-haired young woman in civilian clothes, and a young man in civilian clothes. They are Hans Scholl, his sister Sophie Scholl, and their friend Christoph Probst, members of the White Rose Society who protested against the Nazi government. The Nazis executed them by guillotine on 22 February 1943.
On 22 February 1943, three young Germans, members of the White Rose Society -- Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl, and Christoph Probst -- were guillotined by the Nazis for distributing leaflets speaking out against the crimes of the Third Reich. Their bravery, and their cause, will not be forgotten.

A letter on Philosophy & Public Affairs letterhead that reads: November 12, 1973 Professor Robert Nozick Department of Philosophy Emerson Hall Harvard University Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 Dear Professor Nozick, I have been meaning to send you a note ever since you did not telephone the second time last week just to say that I decided after all to drop the offending post-apostrophes from the possessive of Rawls. This is, as I told you, according to the Chicago Manual of Style an honor due only to Moses and Jesus, but with us aesthetic considerations won out. The decision puts us somewhat in a class by ourselves -- I note that in Brian Barry's new book he and Oxford Press write Rawls's -- but I don't mind being different. I trust that you will not. sincerely, Margot Cutter
November 12, 1973 --- The day Philosophy & Public Affairs started treating Rawls like Jesus.
Crabs might feel pain - new research shows their bodies react to harmful sensations, much like ours. 🦀
If crabs can suffer, should we rethink how we treat them and other animals in farming, research, and beyond?

#Habeck

Higher education has a strong relationship with wage theft, which has been examined throughout years of research, reports, and government enquiries. This paper examines the practices of wage theft that often surround academic promotions, and specifically, the common requirement that someone must already be working at the level for which they are hoping to be promoted. The work uses Australia’s higher education sector as an example, as Australia’s employment and promotion conditions are similar in many aspects to other higher education sectors. The paper provides an analysis of the promotion expectations to which academics are subjected to understand what tasks academics are expected to complete, and for how long, without being paid, before they can apply for promotion. The paper demonstrates to academics, policymakers, and unions, yet another exploitative practice that must be monitored and removed from the modern university as the sector looks to engage more equitable practices.
