Here's one for the "no one should have to say this, but in this day and age we do." No, Academia.edu, I most certainly do NOT want you to turn my article into a podcast. But you did it anyway. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

I find it extremely difficult to believe that anyone experiencing what honestly looks like the apocalypse is going to regard it as a form of liberation or that anyone responsible for it actually cares about how Iranians regard it at all.

that the Trump administration is trying to shut down a leading AI company because it’s unwilling to develop autonomous murder systems is terrifying, and should be of grave concern to everyone in the world

…I've said it so many fucking times, now, but I'll say it again, that it's really fucking messed up that all of these conversations seek to apply to fucking LLMs a standard of personhood we still don't consistently and meaningfully apply to other fucking humans.

Really kind of morally offensive how much contempt these people have for curiosity.

I think we need people to start listening to new experts that said this many years ago

The House of Lords Digital & Communications Committee just published their report on AI, copyright & the creative industries, and their conclusions could not be clearer.

Amazing site here via @timnitgebru.bsky.social - a map of big tech influence on media and media companies.

imo this goes a decent way to explaining why coverage of AI specifically has been so shockingly bad recently. Very useful resource!!

Rainforests are rain-making machines worth tens of billions of dollars to farmers. A new study puts a price tag on forest-generated rainfall, making the economic case for protecting tropical forests as deforestation rises.

β€œIn Brazil alone, the Amazon rainforest generates rainfall worth approximately $20 billion dollars per year if it went to agricultural activities”

Saw a thoughtful thread about AI, don't want to QT or argue. But. The biggest rage factor with LLMs is the people who, because genAI is transformative for coding, think it's transformative for everything else, because they devalue every other form of work and labor and knowledge.

there’s something about rolling back protections for right whales that has the mark of Judge Holden/Blood Meridian about it. A refusal to be tied to the earth in any way, to be accountable to other life. Not even homicidal, but omnicidal.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. There is ZERO reason why a machine that SHOULD BE COMPLETELY MECHANICAL needs to be connected to the Internet.

WHY DO ALL THESE HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES WANT TO BE CONNECTED TO THE BLOODY INTERNET? Our landlady installed light switches that don't work properly unless you use them in conjunction with an app. I don't want a fucking app for light switches. I just want to switch a light on and off, using a switch.

My research is on working class women and AI and the ONE consistency among all of the interviews we’ve done so far is concerns about data centers and environmental impact. We do not bring it up - they do. Every single one.

What privacy? Meta's smart glasses are filming unwitting naked people Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses are a privacy nightmare, with footage of naked people, sensitive information, and violent acts captured and seen by Meta's AI and an army of employees.

Funny, this. I am just now writing the final section of my chapter on "Showing Our Stuff," in which I describe in great detail the long-term harm that comes to students when they allow gen-AI to do the info-gathering, conceptual organization, or writing for their essays and term projects.

your enemies fighting each other can be useful but it doesn't make them your friends. anthropic doesn't want to help with hegseth's apocalyptic fantasy *because they have their own*

you do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to them
