Legal Geography Article of the Day: Lunstrum and Havice apply a classic legal geography argument to jurisdiction: "Considered technical and mundane—it is indeed both—jurisdiction is often left in the shadows to do its spatial splicing, at times uniting, and certainly ordering and regulating."

A picture of Don Mitchell is accompanied by the following text: American Association of Geographers 2025 Annual Meeting, Detroit. Legal Geography Specialty Group Keynote Lecture. Don Mitchell, Uppsala University, Sweden. Talk title: "Waming up the Bulldozers: Homelessness, Law and the Making of Maximally Unjust Cities." Talk abstract: The 2024 Supreme Court decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson is an object lesson in cruelty, allowing cities to punish homeless people simply for being homeless. This talk will place the trial precedents leading to Grants Pass in their historical context, examine the tortured reasoning of the majority's decision, and draw on Justice Sotomayor's stinging dissent. It will then analyze the ruling's legal, deadly cruelty in light of recent developments in justice theory, revealing how what is under construction in the USA is nothing less than maximally unjust cities. Date: March 27 (Thursday), 4:10pm-5:30pm, Room: 330a, Level 3, Huntington Place

What is legal geography? Legal geography explores legal practices and representations across ever-changing spaces, environments, cultures, states and economies, not just courtrooms and legal reasoning!
