Thump 16,17,18 Thump 16: Where the Monarchs Never Die by Rocío Franco Press: Arcana Press Favorite Poem: Where the Monarchs Never Die Three things I loved: 1. The storytelling moving between locations in Mexico and the city of Chicago was very effective in imagery of place. 2. The use of Spanish words and phrases in the collection was thoughtful and personal. I was surprised to find I could understand everything Rocío wrote, though I am only literate in English, and this helped me also understand her.

Thump 15: Why I Bite by Cathrina Jakeman  Press: Bottlecap Press Favorite Poem: Blood Slug Three things I loved: 1. I love to be surprised and the poem Blood Slug is so clever and original. This poem is written like a medical report and it’s just genius. 2. The imagery and ideas expressed in I Ate All My Friends were both gross and relatable, making the reader see the ugly parts of themselves and the world around them.

THUMP 14: Flowers in the Garden by Tyler Steven Tittle Press: Thistle & Thread Favorite Poem: Poppy Three things I loved: 1. The premise! Flowers in the Garden is a short collection personifying flowers as they are used in or represent healing. Through this collection Tyler asks the reader to listen to nature and the wisdom and solace there. 2. Tyler's examination of the poppy as friend and foe draws attention to the very real pain that The Opioid Crisis has caused as juxtaposed to what the poppy was meant to heal.

Don’t send a doctor to do a poet’s work – My In Vivo coding of Poetry (in Brief) by Dr. Rachel Turney  During the first session of Poetry (in Brief) I worked on, what I would like to call, an elementary level In Vivo coding project. This is a qualitative data collection process that uses the exact words of a research subject in order to guide labeling etc. This type of research model introduces a lot of subjectivity and bias, but I felt it was an appropriate way to capture the data (words) shared by our poets.
