If you're a graduate student or know any, look at this call. This is an annual conference at CEU, with a stream of panels in political philosophy. And this year's keynote is Andrew Williams! Deadline for abstracts: the 26th of February.

Join the club of philosophers and anarchists, who wonder whether those who bring children into the world should have the legal right to also bring them up, and if yes, for what reason:

I'm trying to wrap my head around how to use everybody's time in the classroom well, given that many students seem to be reading AI-generated summaries of assigned papers. A digest of what I learned so far, and an invitation to contribute ideas - or complaints:

What conference is this?
A few years ago I came across the great adventurer Daryl Davis, who still fascinates me today. When I was invited to be part of a book on public philosophy, I knew this was my chance to start sharing his story.

Apply, encourage others to apply, and maybe share!
Even if justice requires the abolition of inheritance, procreative liability and parental love generate duties that justify some bequests, limited in size and form. Or so I argue in this paper, now forthcoming in Ethics:

If the positions of advantage in a society reward much in excess of what justice allows, or are unjust because they involve illegitimate power, should we still care about fair equality of opportunity to access them? I think not, for reasons I give here: philpapers.org/archive/GHEO...
This handbook to the philosophy of human rights, edited by Jesse Tomalty and Kerri Woods is out (at an infuriatingly exorbitant price!) Lovely experience to work with them and contribute a piece on children's human rights.

Some problems go away if ignored long enough. Not the one of how to teach given ChatGPT. Come talk about this at Justice Everywhere (and help me improve my current solution)!
If you have conservative sensitivities, can you also be an egalitarian? I think so. A forthcoming paper on a theme that Jerry Cohen discussed in one of my favourite philosophy pieces.

You can still apply for next AY if you don't need a visa for Austria. Please spread the word.
Really proud of my student Sanat, who is giving a less than 3 minutes overview of his work here:

So sad.
Postdocs in Louvain-la-Neuve, one of the best places to be!

Another great post by Sanat Sogani, on what to do about the new AI tools when it comes to teaching and assessing students.

Thanks for the kind note, Katarina!
I didn't think I'd write about abortion, but Japa Pallikkathayil's new article (in the Journal of Applied Philosophy) was inspiring - a new take on the issue! - and so I penned down this short reply to it:
Just out, my paper with Tim Meijers about Axel Gosseries' recent book on intergenerational justice. On the never ending fascination of the non-identity problem.
Read Alexandru Volacu on how the Athenians "managed to set up an institutional framework ... that curtailed both the concentration of massive wealth and the damaging political influence of the well-off." Non-ideal theory at its best.

Deadline on the 4th of February.
And please share this announcement if it's likely that there are interested people in your network(s).
We have a superb student/faculty ratio, lots of time for, and attention to, our students. The CEU community is warm, supportive and unpretentious. And there are teaching opportunities for doctoral students from the second year onwards.
Apply to study for a doctorate in political theory at the Central European University, or tell others about this opportunity. All our students get funding (tuition fees and living costs.) Links to admission procedure and program:

Come to Vienna in May, for the 6th yearly POLEMO symposium in political philosophy! Applications now open (for graduate students and early career people). Keynotes from Serena Olsaretti and Andrew Mason - not bad, huh?

There are worries about implementation, but the very fact that now parents can tell their children, in good conscience, that it's illegal to use social media is huge progress!
