Unregulated
expansion of associate roles in the NHS without the necessary training & safety checks, has put the health of some
patients at risk
It is rarely cost effective after taking into account the loss of the experience/training/knowledge of nurses & doctors in care

Would be great if @NHSE_WTE & @DHSCgovuk would act with integrity now and establish security for doctors this summer and onwards
I encourage doctors to again prepare to band together and fight for our profession & especially our most hard hit colleagues
Studying medicine in the UK requires personal, financial, professional sacrifices, taken under the premise of reasonable chance to progress to consultant/GP
Yet @NHSEWTE hold data showing career progression may stall or worse, halt, while still pushing the illusion of stability
This poses the question of what model of healthcare delivery our policy makers are pushing with
A concerted effort to increase number of SHO level doctors (+ effort to show equivalence from non doctors)
Without any similar effort to allow reasonable progression to expert level
We do not have enough experienced doctors to deliver high quality healthcare
And simultaneously blame funding for not training more
But have enough funding for expansion of more expensive per output aspects of healthcare delivery (let alone safety/risk profile)
With more reports of funding cut for consultant posts, this workforce failure will only hasten the exodus of doctors from UK medicine
A strategy reliant on excessive import/export of doctors is shortsighted as churn is inefficient and we know IMGs leave too
Worse now, doctors are fearing widespread unemployment this summer
FY2s not immediately entering training isn’t new; has been rising over last decade
But saturation of fellow posts & lack of locum IS new, leading to prospect of no reasonable job opportunities within UK medicine
We know automatic career progression in medicine is false, yet assumed by external bodies e.g media/govt
It was used against us in pay campaign to justify lower pay for doctors & even argue MAPs, ‘lacking career progression’ should start on higher pay (argument with many flaws)
Job security in medicine - previously paraded as guaranteed - doesn’t exist
Will @NavinaEvans commit to no involuntary unemployment for UK doctors?
Or is @NHSE_WTE’s workforce planning failure leading towards a never event?
Is it even failure or intentional from @DHSCgovuk
6 years ago, when I got an offer for medical school, I was told I’d have a job for life.
Weekly, I hear of people that can’t get doctors appointments, or two year waitlists.
Doctors in their thousands are getting rejected for jobs, and today I was one of them. A 🧵.

The Government is backtracking on agreements made
This doesn’t bode well for their attempt to build trust from doctors
We know there’s only one body we can trust, and that’s ourselves.
Doctors should keep their details updated and stay posted:

The BMA Resident Doctors Committee has entered dispute with the Government over exception reporting reform delays for doctors in England.

In 2013 work was done to establish the future need for GPs
At that time projections estimated the need for 36-44k GPs by 2025
In 2015 5000 more were promised by the incoming Tory Govt by 2019 they increased this to 6000
27500 the reality wasn’t even on the graph

The RCoA Scope of Practice for Anaesthesia Associates is out - but what about those Trusts that don't adhere to it? Are they negligent?
We asked an academic lawyer for her opinion.
TL;DR; The RCoA means business.

This year the BMA has grown from strength-to-strength. Let’s make 2025 another year where doctors make the difference.

Royal College of Anaesthetists has done an excellent job setting scope for AAs.
But the GMC want it done differently.

The Government’s suggested 2.8% pay uplift for doctors shows a poor grasp of unresolved pay issues.

To recap:
1️⃣ Compare your payslip to what you should expect
2️⃣ Ask your employer for a detailed breakdown of your payslip - it’s their duty to explain
3️⃣ Escalate to a rep/ IRO if you notice an issue
4️⃣ Challenge/ organise to take action if your employer has underpaid
If your basic pay arrears looks different to the BMA website, don’t panic (yet)
The table below includes the uplift applied to November which admittedly isn’t technically backpay
But your Nov basic pay - Oct basic pay + Nov basic pay arrears should thereabouts equal the table
Website now updated
The numbers in these are gross pay
Don’t include strike deductions, and you’ll have deductions from tax/ NI/ pension/ student loans etc
If you’re emergency taxed, you can speak to HMRC to sort out sooner or wait till end of tax year
Calculators made by doctors which all have good uptake from what I hear
doctorspaycheck.com/uplift/
paypulse.co.uk/uplift
pay.doctorsvote.app/backpay
- None BMA endorsed but will give at very least ballpark figure
- DV calc uses whole months so slightly more variation expected
Backpay due for resident doctors
Know what to expect
If you don’t understand your slip, ask payroll to explain
If still doesn’t make sense, speak to a rep @the-bma.bsky.social
Employers should get it right but... NHS
Don’t be complacent. Don’t be underpaid
