The Iran war: Potential food security impacts Problems in the Strait of Hormuz reverberate globally.

I found this article by Joseph Glauber at @ifpri.org to be informative and even-handed.

It’s worth a read especially if you are trying to navigate all the stories (and hot takes) about global energy and fertilizer markets, and effects on prices and food security in different places.

Gutting regulations is not going to be the thing for nuclear power many people seem to think it is.

I too thought so once. But then we interviewed a person who knew how and why the current Finnish #nuclear #energy #law was born.

The "father of Finnish nuclear power" *demanded* stricter permits!

a chart showing high new EV sales (close to 100% for 2025) but slow change in usage, registration and emissions drops

Norway is at ~100% EVs for new sales, but 7 out of every 10km driven in 2024 was reliant on fossil fuels. Cars stick around for decades - so change is slow.

Protecting ppl from fossil fuel crises means EVs, yes, but *fast deep cuts* means huge $$ in public and active transport. Speed matters!

"Since there is no reason for the US military to deliberately target a school full of children, that raises questions about whether the attack was an intelligence failure." A sentence that can only be written and accepted with complete ignorance of past & present actions of the US military

UK energy prices are soaring – and propagandists want to sell you a false reason why | George Monbiot The war on Iran has put fossil-fuel prices centre stage, but don’t believe those who tout β€˜maximising the North Sea’ as our salvation, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

If it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between fossil-fuel lobbyists and the billionaire press, that's because there isn’t one.
My column on the politicians, journalists and junktanks using the Iran crisis as an excuse to extract our remaining gas and oil.

New blog post: The Camel's Camel.
Today, I found a beautiful example of synonymized plagiarism involving the microbiome of a camel’s udder.

For the war in Iran Trump team says:
- It's not about destroying the nuclear weapons program
- It's not about regime change
- There was no contingency plan for Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz

on land and sea, fuel depots, oil fields, petrocehmical refineries, oil and gas tankers, are burning, billowing toxic smoke into the lungs of people and animals and sludge into marine life.

The β€˜Toxic Cocktail’ Brewing in Pennsylvania’s Waterways - Inside Climate News Pennsylvania is still cleaning up decades’ worth of coal mining pollution. Now it must also contend with millions of tons of fracking waste, some of it radioactive.

Fracking waste has a mix of chemicals from fracking fluid + others leached from underground.

Arsenic, lead, cancer-causing benzenes, radioactive radium can all be present.

It's being dumped in Pennsylvania landfills.

Mounting evidence says it's getting into rivers:

a man in a red robe is sitting in a chair and smiling while saying what an idiot . Alt: a man in a red robe is sitting in a chair and smiling while saying what an idiot .

Do you know, that the word idiot is from the Greeks? Do you know its original meaning? It was a specific word created to describe those people that don’t vote. So appropriate still today.
