When I say Gaius sucks, this is what I mean!!! I honestly do think critical examination of Gaius is important and applicable to real life. Like examining who actually benefits from a 'meritocracy' - who 'deserves' things, who 'earned' it - who decides that and why... Food for thought.

Gaius's specific brand of true believer and his belief or carrot-and-stick approach - as in he either believes non-garly people can assimilate or using the possibility of assimilation to escape cruelty (but not really) to entice people to turn against each other - is just very interesting to ponder.

[hc] Clearly I am marinating on a specific Gaius thought this week 😂 - but examining Gaius and his apparent 'meritocracy', that's like... inherently flawed! Because who is deciding what that merit is. It's just always self serving to whoever is in charge of that, and with the Empire it's Very clear.
