Every week Ikoku Nikki is just so effortlessly good to the point I don't know *which* of its praises I'd be singing- & then I find myself just speechless
The commentary on patriarchy? Awesome. Emiri side romance plot? Heck yeah. The slow buildup of Asa figuring out herself? Yeah

Kasamachi talking about how he does enjoy someone talk smack at his dad, but says something that his dad would say later on. Then Makio, for all her talk about not understanding Asa's grief & sadness & not being able to give her the comfort of a definite "your mother loved you...

Emiri's comment sums up this episode pretty well. All the little contradictions shown. Asa's caseworker being so straight-laced that he's never skipped school but clearly tries his best to put himself in the shoes of a kid that's skipping school...

Tried playing the "Prolegomena To a Hyperdimensional Interface That Will Be Able to Manifest From Three-Minute Interchanges" demo, and while it *is* pretty short, it's really interesting! Looking forward to the final game especially since it features Aya Endo! (Sheryl Nome)

But also with how, in the anime Lili starts her study at the academy technically skilled at art yet still grasping at going beyond pure technical skills (she won second place for the school contest), yet in the manga she's just not very good yet (not even placing in the top ten).

So while all of the episodes are out on Netflix to binge, I do recommend enjoying it at a slower pace along with the weekly releases of the manga chapters. It's fun to see the differences between the two, like how Lili's design is slightly different.

Also interesting is how, in a rare occasion for international audiences, both the anime (on Netflix) and manga (on Mangaplus) are coming out at roughly the same time! It's not often that viewers outside of Japan get to enjoy the media mix like this.

Not yet unfortunately, Southeast Asian/Indonesian distributors announced they're bringing it here (alongside a proper release of the first movie in theatres, which didn't happen in 2021 because of lockdown), but with no set date for release yet.

Then dies as he's shot with a gun. Lying alone in the snow. It's not hard to imagine that the protagonist himself would eventually fall into a similar, cold & lonely fate as his father the other national treasures before him, so blinded by the sight of the beautiful snow falling.

The movie's opening act ends with the young protagonist watching as his Yakuza father makes a final stand with his blade, shouting at his son to witness as he tries to make an honorable last stand. He tries to uphold his ideals and way of life-

Who gets to be the national treasure, & who are just used as caretakers, stepping stones, & homemakers to produce said national treasure? We should be wary of the allure of "beautiful sceneries" and be aware of, & reconsider whether sacrifices are even worth it for such a thing.

Yet considering all of the above, to me Kokuho can also read as a kind of cautionary tale- yes the pursuit of art can result in something absolutely beautiful at the end. But in the pursuit of "beautiful sceneries", just how many people are to be sacrificed to the wayside?

Finding and admiring in awe the same beauty that made him be enthralled by Kabuki in the first place. It's a scene that I, as the viewer also find absolutely beautiful. Really, despite the 3hr runtime, the Kabuki scenes make this movie worth it.

So Kokuho presents these structures as is, & while to its credit it does muse on whether artistic skill is enough merit to overturn *some* tradition, it doesn't reject that tradition entirely. It all comes down to (light spoilers) the final scenes-
