The #FeedingTheElephant team (@catherinefte.bsky.social, @dawnd.bsky.social, and me) wanted to provide context on how peer review and publishing timelines. We also celebrate Elephant contributors mentioned in the article: Walter Biggins, @rcolesworthy.bsky.social, and @lportwoodstacer.bsky.social.
Let me tell you something. Yβall are asking too many damn questions at every point of sale. I have to leave a comment, make a suggestion, donate to a charity, choose a method of payment three times and then multiple choice of ways to get a receipt.
Take the damn money and leave me alone.
@timeshighered.bsky.social linked a #FeedingTheElephant post in a recent article they published. The Elephant team shared a series of posts that respond to the article and highlight the contributions of Walter Biggins, @rcolesworthy.bsky.social and @lportwoodstacer.bsky.social to the Elephant.
write as well as you can, have good ideas, follow the specs of the publication, most people won't read it, of those who do a bunch will skim or misread or both, one person will randomly, like on a bus, tell you they loved it twenty years later when you've forgotten what you wrote, such!! is life!!
most people won't read most things; it's fine
If we met in the pods, my enjoyment of Love Is Blind and Sβs contempt for it would probably be the hurdle we just couldnβt push past in the real world
Well, gas is expensive, and food is expensive, and weβre doing a war nobody wants, but at least there are no jobs
If you took $1 billion and gave it to the endowment of a different small college each day, they could each provide a free college education to several hundred students per year in perpetuity. Instead we are using that money to bomb schools and kill students in Iran, for no clearly stated purpose.
π I used to look at the grade percentage for class participation on my lit syllabi and shrink in horror. I have to talk?? Ugh! No thank you! I remembered that every time I put such percentages on my own syllabi or met with silence in the classroom. (I also took incompletes, asked for extensionsβ¦)
(I got an A in that psych class. He really did teach β and test β straight out of the textbook!)
(Iβm not a teacher anymore so I get to be snarky about kids today bwahahaha.
Kidding! I love the youth. But our cruel terrible country doesnβt and it suuuuucks.)
In the same letter, I tell her that all the reading for my courses is overwhelming and testing my tried and true high-school method of leaving everything until the last minute so sorry, kids today, since the dawn of time college has been A LOT. Welcome!
Among the things I found at my momβs is a letter I sent her my freshman year of collegeβit was the 90s! We were epistolary!βtelling her I skipped psych lectures *but it was ok b/c the prof said we could*βraising the Q *why* have I been having anxiety dreams about missing class for the last 25 yrs?!
Thank you!! I so appreciate this. I totally took the OP to be in good faith. It was just the THE framing that made me wary but itβs the nature of the beast with this stuff. I stand by my defense of Reader 2 though! ππͺ
In the meantime, I have an articleβan actual peer-reviewed article!βcoming out on some of these issues, and pretty soon, I think. It calls not only for further solidarity with but also further *study* of UPsβmore βcritiqueβ in the robust sense. Not fault finding, but reflection & commitment.
This is also why I havenβt written a column in forever. CHE has been great and super understanding. Stay tuned though because the next one, whenever it happens, will be onβwait for itβwhat to do if an editor doesnβt reply.
The brutal irony of this is that *I* am an unresponsive editor these days, as you know if youβve tried to email me and received my autoreply. Editors are people, too. But my colleagues are *incredible* and I know they are (as my boss would say) juggling all the chainsaws in my absence.
I canβt access this so Iβm not sure what the quote is. My hope is that it underscores my main point always: your working conditions are our working conditions. βDelaysβ are labor and people issues not failures of service. Solidarity forever.
Cambridge is leaving X. Our policy order to take the city off the platform passed unanimously Monday night. Yesterday morning, the city posted a final farewell messageβand then went dark.

This is so malignant and unserious. That these groups have to put their thumb on the scale so egregiously to get the results they've pre-ordained tells you everything you need to know about them. x.com/daveweigel/s...
Yeeesssssss!! Biggest congrats! π€
Ethan Hawkeβs genuine extreme excitement tho π
Catching up on the Actor Awards and the standing O for Michael B. Jordan made me cry.
Guys!!!!! He won π

we reached the βno WMDsβ phase in two days.
Honestly the more time you spend working through a specific text the more βtransformativeβ your use is and the more justifiable fair use is. The only real concern is poetry under copyright. Def avoid permissions. Modify as Ria suggests (if necessary) to claim fair use.
