write as well as you can, have good ideas, follow the specs of the publication, most people won't read it, of those who do a bunch will skim or misread or both, one person will randomly, like on a bus, tell you they loved it twenty years later when you've forgotten what you wrote, such!! is life!!

If you took $1 billion and gave it to the endowment of a different small college each day, they could each provide a free college education to several hundred students per year in perpetuity. Instead we are using that money to bomb schools and kill students in Iran, for no clearly stated purpose.
😂 I used to look at the grade percentage for class participation on my lit syllabi and shrink in horror. I have to talk?? Ugh! No thank you! I remembered that every time I put such percentages on my own syllabi or met with silence in the classroom. (I also took incompletes, asked for extensions…)
(I got an A in that psych class. He really did teach — and test — straight out of the textbook!)

In the same letter, I tell her that all the reading for my courses is overwhelming and testing my tried and true high-school method of leaving everything until the last minute so sorry, kids today, since the dawn of time college has been A LOT. Welcome!
Among the things I found at my mom’s is a letter I sent her my freshman year of college—it was the 90s! We were epistolary!—telling her I skipped psych lectures *but it was ok b/c the prof said we could*—raising the Q *why* have I been having anxiety dreams about missing class for the last 25 yrs?!

In the meantime, I have an article—an actual peer-reviewed article!—coming out on some of these issues, and pretty soon, I think. It calls not only for further solidarity with but also further *study* of UPs—more “critique” in the robust sense. Not fault finding, but reflection & commitment.
This is also why I haven’t written a column in forever. CHE has been great and super understanding. Stay tuned though because the next one, whenever it happens, will be on—wait for it—what to do if an editor doesn’t reply.
The brutal irony of this is that *I* am an unresponsive editor these days, as you know if you’ve tried to email me and received my autoreply. Editors are people, too. But my colleagues are *incredible* and I know they are (as my boss would say) juggling all the chainsaws in my absence.
I can’t access this so I’m not sure what the quote is. My hope is that it underscores my main point always: your working conditions are our working conditions. “Delays” are labor and people issues not failures of service. Solidarity forever.

Honestly the more time you spend working through a specific text the more “transformative” your use is and the more justifiable fair use is. The only real concern is poetry under copyright. Def avoid permissions. Modify as Ria suggests (if necessary) to claim fair use.
