We are resetting our relationship with the EU, our closest and largest trading partner, to make trade easier and cheaper, and deliver tangible benefits for British businesses.

We are talking about real businesses, real employers: the Somerset cheesemaker with export trade halved, the Welsh shellfish trader turning down orders because their catch isn’t fresh by the time the paperwork is done, the Scottish farmer who can no longer sell seed potatoes to customers they’ve supplied for decades.

Emma Reynolds MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs.

By reducing delays and unnecessary paperwork, this deal will help keep shelves stocked, protect jobs and put downward pressure on food price inflation for families across the country.

British businesses deserve better and we will work hand-in-hand with them to ensure this deal is a success.

The EU is the largest single market in the world, and it was a disastrous decision for our economy to ever leave it. Polling by Opinium on behalf of European Movement UK has found that 75% of British adults, who felt Brexit had been harmful to the UK, favour joining single market to lower taxes.

Today, The Business and Trade Committee questioned Trade Minister Chris Bryant MP on whether Britain can afford to continue 'straddling the Channel and the Atlantic'. The answer is clear, we have the largest trading bloc in the world on our doorstep: it's time to rejoin the single market.

Consensus voting made sense when there were only a dozen EU member states, but with 27 (or more) it's a recipe for paralysis and a facilitator of corruption in countries such as Hungary and Slovakia that the EU could otherwise root out.

All EU decisions should be made by Qualified Majority Voting.

So long as the national veto, concensus voting, is retained for foreign and security policy, the EU will never be able to properly defend its interests or values.

@vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu is right that the millstone of consensus voting must be taken from around the EU's neck.

Every time I read what a UK minister says about the EU it almost feels like they're assuming we have the same power as members. We're not negotiating, we're making representations. Only EU institutions are negotiating their rules.

Britain still remains in Europe geographically. It's time we start acting like it, and repair our relationship with the continent.

[The SPS agreement] will make it easier, cheaper and quicker for British businesses to export and import food, animals and plants.

By removing complex checks and paperwork for the vast majority of this trade, an agreement will reduce costs and red tape for local businesses while fully protecting the integrity of the UK internal market. Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

The UK Government have launched a six-week call for information as it ‘moves closer’ to a Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) agreement with the EU. The agreement aims to facilitate the smooth flow of agrifood goods and plants from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.

The first lesson of war is ‘know your enemy’ – and Britain’s enemy now is Donald Trump | Simon Tisdall As the Iran disaster escalates, the US president should be seen as an enemy whose actions threaten the lawful, democratic way of life everywhere, says Guardian foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdal...

Simon Tisdall makes excellent points in this article.

Nearly ten years ago the UK voted to leave the EU, but we should have been seeking independence from the US instead.

We must do so now, and reuniting with our democratic European allies will be key to it.

It's difficult to see how the UK Government can seize the moment for a really meaningful reset in the UK-EU relationship while clinging to a Blue Labour agenda on immigration and identity.

To be fully trusted in Europe, the UK government must embrace the idea of Europe, and the four freedoms!

On International Women's Day we remember that rights are never given, they have been fought for, and they must be defended.

And there is now an axis of autocracy from Washington to Moscow, and including Reform and others in the UK, that seeks to undermine women's rights.

The Single Market was responsible for 41% of the UK’s exports in 2024, and remains the largest trading bloc in the world. Rejoining would eliminate trade barriers for most goods and services, control consumer prices, and allow capital, goods and people to move freely.
