There is something profoundly disconcerting about scheduling the death of another living being.

Reading Babel by RF Kuang right now realllllly hits different given the current political climate between the US and China…
okay i do NOT like that this presenter is trying to pronounce LGBTIA saying “ligabateeah”
was the break up between Cellino and Barnes so ugly and petty that every billboard in town with one has a billboard with the other right behind it?
Tonight I got drunk at D&D and dropped “LairBnB” and felt really proud about that one.
Well, the more vers-bottoms we recruit, the better!
okay let’s see… with the three of us on a rotating schedule… we could each be back at only 33% top, which seems like a decent-ish ratio
At some point I’m going to have to accept that same fate. 🥲
And if this is something the university really thinks the students need to learn about and master, they need to make space (and money) for courses to address it, because writing is far from the only part of academia being affected.
So unless there is something new that actually addresses the issue or a curricular revamp, I am already dreading this workshop.
The students are using it, often poorly. And if they’re using it well enough that I don’t catch you, maybe good for them they understand the tool.
I do not have any space in my syllabus. I canNOT be the class that is responsible for this emergent societal shift.
and it never feels like we get anywhere whenever it comes up. 1/3 of the room says oh no! Everything is ruined! 1/3 says this is cool, we should embrace it! And 1/3 says hold me I’m scared.
Got the email about our faculty development workshop and it is about Gen AI … AGAIN. Like, sure, it’s a big deal. But if I’m completely honest, I am so bored of talking about ChatGPT and its implications for writing instruction. It’s the only thing anyone has talked about for three or four years.

Sometimes I say things to students and I’m like, ooh that’s good I should write that down.
Today a student was frustrated I was asking tough clarifying questions about their research paper and i said:
“I’m not trying to take the wind out of your sails; I’m trying to help you build a better boat.”
she’s just like me fr
Every time a student in my professional writing class uses simply “Experience” as a resume header, a fairy loses its wings.
And by fairy, obviously, i mean me. And by wings i mean mind.
admittedly my number was a nonscientific guess, but might be close lol
it’s another case of “gay is so unserious sometimes” — i definitely know what at least 75% of my friends look like naked 😂
Looking great!
So in one MONTH Trump has cost taxpayers DOUBLE that supposed “savings” playing GOLF. These grants are typically paid out over 1-5 YEARS. I really really hate this timeline.
/rant_off
In his first month in office, Trump has made a golf trip every weekend. 9 of his first 30 days have been on the golf course. And well, thanks to inflation, the 2017 cost of $13M is ~$17M in 2025. (31% cum. infl. since 2017
according to bls.gov)
Even if we accept that we call cutting this $8 million in research a “savings” or “efficiency” here’s the 2019 GAO report that shows that his 4 trips to Mar-a-Largo in February and March of 2017 cost *$13 Million Dollars* — $10M in operations costs, $3M in duty costs billed to DOD and DHS.
Just the LEVELS of stupid - not only is it clear they don’t / won’t understand science and things like mouse models, but the rhetoric is insane:
“The Fake News losers at CNN tried to fact check it, but President Trump was right (as usual)”
—on the official White House press site?? Worst timeline.
PLEASE READ BOOKS — ebooks, books on tape, whatever! But please!! (also amusing comments)
The notion that Trump's "I'm king" tweet is "just trolling" or "a joke" presents an opportunity to recreate my just-joking thread (porting it over from the Bad Place):
1. I wrote my PhD dissertation on the social function of humor (in literature & film) and here's the thing about "just joking."
I think it will flatten out eventually, and it also helps that there’s more positive representation in media. Now if someone is having that internal experience of “something feels different” they can often see that reflected in others online, in movies, tv, etc. Much better than when i was younger!
Any of my Blooskees in NYC going to be around and/or have a place i could borrow the weekend of March 14th? 😬🤗
Having one of those days where I keep thinking: “Is that so much to ask?”
