Yay Nick!
Yay Nick!
More video of the tank on Lafayette a short while ago outside 26 Federal Plaza, and federal agents making arrests of counter protesters.
I joined a team of ecologists wading through the muck of the Carolina coast in search of "ghost forests" killed by rising seas for @science.org. We were guided by a a new map that reveals millions of dead trees standing along the East Coast, marking an overlooked consequence of climate change...
Honored to have won an @sciencewriters.org "Science in Society" award for my @newscientist.com story on the Panama Canal's chronic water shortages. It's something the canal's visionary builders never imagined would be possible in one of the rainiest parts of the planet...
Just now, 11 state and city lawmakers were arrested by DHS police on the 10th floor of 26 Federal Plaza after a hour of demanding access to the ICE lock up on the same floor. @thecity.nyc
Assembly Member Jessica GonzΓ‘lez-Rojas is considering a run for state Sen. Jessica Ramos' Senate seat, sources tell @cityandstateny.bsky.social: www.cityandstateny.com/politics/202...
Will Zohran Mamdani run as the WFP candidate in November if he loses tonight's Democratic primary?
Many have assumed he will, but one thing you should know about both Mamdani and DSA is that they won't get involved in unwinnable races: www.cityandstateny.com/politics/202...
"Make sure security knows he is not allowed back into this room." - the mayor bars @c-sommerfeldt.bsky.social from the briefing room after he asks questions without raising his hand. It's really the only way Chris can get a question in, given how rarely the mayor takes questions from him.
Lander just got detained by federal agents as he tried to escort a man out of the courtroom. Lander was taken in an elevator with masked agents, along with one member of his NYPD security detail.
Traffic violence/deaths
Stringer: dedicated bike lanes, no ebikes on sidewalks HITS Brad Lander for speeding tickets while going to Vision Zero press conferences!
UFT endorsed Stringer in 2021
Zellnor Myrie says he was proud to vote for class size bill, calls for mental health resources for students
On class size mandate: Adrienne Adams says she's seen "the effects of too many students crammed in a classroom" btw the teachers union hasn't endorsed in the mayor's race yet so this question is extra loaded
Whitney Tilson offers some sobering stats on Mamdani's tax plan, calls it "preposterous" "It's economic growth we need. Not destructive policies that would crush growth"
Adrienne Adams to Zohran Mamdani: Do you think you're more qualified than me to run this city? - tough Q for a fellow WFP slate member
Both Scott Stringer and Zellnor Myrie direct their (supportive) questions to Adrienne Adams.
Cute playgrounds question!
Would you designate 1% of the city budget for parks? (Eric adams said he would do this but didn't)
Tilson: yes
Stringer: yes
Myrie: yes (very cute tribute to prospect park)
Mamdani: yes
Lander: yes
Cuomo: yes (and also get private sector involved)
Adrienne Adams: Yes
Have you ever voted for a republican
Mamdani: No
Myrie: No but IDC
Stringer: No
Tilson: Bloomberg
Adams: No
Lander: No
Cuomo: No
One dept you would make cuts to:
Tilson: Dept of Education
Stringer: Efficiencies in every city agency
Myrie: EDC
Mamdani: End city's addiction to consulting
Lander: Last year we paid out $2 million in claims against the city
Cuomo: Start w HPD
Adams: Mayor implemented PEGs, cuts not needed now
Adrienne Adams calls Cuomo's rhetoric "scare tactics"
This is one of the few areas where he diverges from Eric Adams - who says the city is much much better than it was in 2022 when he took office
Cuomo's campaign has been consistent from the beginning on one message: NYC is in crisis.
Except Whitney Tilson - who is currently hitting Zohran for not wanting more cops in his public safety plan
So far the vibe on stage is definitely let's unite against Andrew Cuomo
Kind of interesting that Lander is focusing on the allegations from Charlotte Bennett about Cuomo's probing questions, when Brittany Commisso alleged that Cuomo groped her and told her not to tell anyone
Cuomo on sexual harassment allegations: "It was all political" here's the NY Assembly's report on that nyassembly.gov/write/upload...
Mamdani's housing plan focuses on the most vulnerable - low-income people and seniors, using public resources to build. This is diff from everyone else's plans
Cuomo touts his massive infrastructure legacy - second ave subway included "We are going to have to have a full-on assault to build affordable housing"
Did you hear? Brad Lander was the fave pick of the NYT Opinion section
