The statue of "John Harvard" at Harvard University. It's worth noting that no portraits of Harvard are known to exist, so there is nothing to suggest what he had actually looked like. The inscription below the statue reads: "John Harvard Β· Founder Β· 1636". It also bears a bronze plaque indicating the university was founded in 1838. This has led to the stature becoming known as the "Statue of Three Lies". Those lies are: #1 : This is not John Harvard's face; no picture or statue of John Harvard survived. #2 : John Harvard was not founder of Harvard University; it was founded two years prior to being renamed Harvard in 1638. #3 : The plaque says Harvard was founded in 1638; in fact, it was founded two years earlier.
13 March 1639: Harvard University was named in honour of the former Charlestown minister, John Harvard. #History
John #Harvard had bequeathed his entire library, and half of his estate, to the school that now bears his name.
