Feels like it gels nicely with the tone of the game! Blackest grief, unreality, and impending doom made bearable by moments of human warmth and hope.
Another '90s favorite of mine, MDK (1997), does something kind of similar with how it uses shadows. Always loved the visual design in that one, too.

Something about the way Majora paired bright, vibrant colors with intense dark shadows always stuck with me. It's striking.
Be sure to give the Marathon trilogy a shot sometime if you like Halo; The OG games are open source and a lot of what they do is essentially a antepiece for what Bungie'd later do with Halo!
