I had a book come out yesterday (BUTTERFLY EFFECTS, available now from a bookstore near you), and as is often the case, I went out last night to promote it. Bookstore event, whee.
I had a conversation with this teenager where I discussed how these tools benefit from stolen authors' work, without consent or compensation. She said she still just likes her "co-written books" so much better than "other books." One of my friends told me her brother is the same. How common is this?
I learned a friend's 18yo, who loved reading books, now exclusively "reads" "books" she's generating with ChatGPT. She said she likes controlling the plot and always getting the endings she wants. It's sad to see this curious mind increasingly drawn to the products of a pattern repetition machine.

I've been seeing people say, sue over a breached short story contract. Ok. I am not a lawyer and can't give legal advice. I'm only speaking IME. When you sell a short story at pro rates it's 5-8 cents a word. (SFFH) Semi pro and token are less. At these rates the most you can be paid is $600 but

One of my flower watercolours from 1988, sold a long time ago. This image is scanned from a film photo of the original so isn't a good reproduction. I often wonder where my old paintings are now. Are they still on walls or have they ended up dumped or sold in charity shops?

I flipped through the album, admiring how her bangs used to #kiss her forehead before she lost her hair. She was beautiful 'til the end, of course, but those old photos held things my last memories of her didn't: energy, excitement, hope. I wished I had cherished our time together more.
