holy shit
Oh jeez
This has always been my concern. Even if the passed budgets seem favorable, the White House is going to slow walk things and try to use whatever means necessary to prevent spending the way Congress wants.
Until Congress stands up to it, science budgets shouldn't be considered actual policy.
Many of yβall asked how you can support and donate to our female athletes and the celebrations,,, so I created a Go Fund Me. Iβm hopeful this can have an impact beyond the weekend and help those that represent the best of the US

Opportunities and resources for women's curling teams in the US don't match up with what's available for men. So, I asked current and former competitive curlers to hear what contributes to the discrepancy.
On the challenges and the hope for the future:
It's extremely important for people to understand that FEMA currently has enough money to keep paying out long-term recovery costs. Noem is simply choosing not to spend it and blaming it on the shutdown.

Oh I know! I'm just thinking about it from the perspective of being brand-new to the sport and how the feeds feel so dark and quiet compared to the ($$$) Olympics coverage. I'm truly wishful thinking because commentary is SO helpful to understanding what you're seeing, and I want people to watch!
I don't know anything about anything, but I so wish USA Curling could afford to staff more of these games with commentators (or at least keep the scoreboard updated) to capitalize on Olympics momentum. Especially for moments like this!

US Olympic Curling Team member speaks out against ICE:
"I'm proud to represent Team USA. But we'd be remiss if we didn't mention what's going on in Minnesota and what a tough time it's been. What's happening is wrong. There's no shades of gray."

A large room full of people facing TVs with the gold medal curling game on.
My 12yo daughter skipped school for the first time to join a packed house for the gold medal game at the Duluth Curling Club. She wanted to be there when Cory Thiesse became the first-ever US woman to win an Olympic medal, and that was a guarantee, plus, "cheese curds beat any school lunch."
If you've never curled, and you visit the Duluth Curling Club, at least one person will offer to teach you by the time you leave. www.startribune.com/at-duluth-cu...
The alt text got the score wrong because of my thumbs. π Final score was 6-5 (because as in many sports, points don't go down in curling).
A curling scoreboard showing that the red team was up 5-3 going into the sixth and final (because juniors) end, and the score ending up 6-4 in favor of white.
A curling sheet with flags hanging from the ceiling and the scoreboard in the distance.
My daughter's team had a thrilling come-from-behind victory at her junior bonspiel tonight.
OH MY GOD THEY'RE ACTUALLY DOING PRISENCOLINENSINAINCIUSOL
They should have Mariah Carey do Prisencolinensinainciusol next

My cat loves circles, she loves TV, and she especially loves circles *on TV* (she is also unhealthily obsessed with my 12yo daughter who curls - related?), so mixed doubles curling has been a real thrill for her so far. I fully expect her to break our TV before the end of the Olympics.
I'm not sure who keeps track of these things, but this could be the first time Duluthians have been featured on Snoop Dogg's clothing.
Mixed doubles at the Olympics starts in less than 24 hours.
This might be the most unpredictable curling field we've seen. Why?

There's a prison revolt at a concentration camp in Texas in solidarity with Minneapolis:
The Minneapolis #EmergencyManagement Director is a hero. She is recalling her own humanitarian experience in international conflict zones and making a statement about how those experiences mirror what is happening now. Thank you, #RachelSayre.
Alex Pretti was a colleague at the VA. We hired him to recruit for our trial. He became an ICU nurse- I lover working with him. He was a good kind person who lived to help and these fuckers executed him.

Here's a photo of Tippy & her family. They live in Brooklyn Park and she's been in the Minnesota Reformer before. And there's artist and children's book illustrator Heather, the sort of person who participates as a host for neighborhood garage theater & performance tours.
