Drone strikes in Haiti.
Drone strikes. In Haiti.
By private contractors.
Theyβre killing Haitians for private profit & the world barely pays attention.
The story of Haiti is the story America likes to tell about itself. Except there, itβs true. And the west has never stopped punishing Haiti for it
Sounds like this is similar to what Warwick University attempted in 2015, outsourcing some staff to a subsidiary firm called Teach Higher. That effort was defeated by local opposition. www.ucu.org.uk/article/7541...
Hopefully it's not too late for Sheffield Hallam staff to do the same here.
There are political problems where understanding motivation is complex but Blue Labour isn't really one of them. They're reactionaries who think everything that has happened since 1945 is a catastrophe, that there are too many foreigners in the country, and that everyone secretly agrees with them.
I dont think the tweeter is saying "those people in Europe wrongly think this about us brave Scots" but "this belief is one of the most stupid that is held by people anywhere in Europe" (including Scotland, and rUK, in Europe)
π¨ WATCH: Labour MP Charlotte Nichols reveals she was raped as an MP as she opposes the jury trial reforms
"I waited 1,088 days to go to court. We've been told [by the Government] that if we have concerns about this Bill, it's because we've not been raped"
For Mahmoud Khalll, this past year has been marked by profound hardship-and by profound courage. A year ago, Mahmoud was walking home through our city after sharing an iftar with his wife Noor when he was detained by federal agents, flown to Louisiana, and then held in an ICE facility for months. In that time, he was forced to miss the birth of his first child. All of this for exercising his First Amendment rights in protesting the ongoing genocide in Palestine. And yet, even in the face of that cruelty, there has also been beauty. New Yorkers raising their voices in solidarity. A city refusing to look away. Mahmoud won his freedom, and a father was finally reunited with his child. Last night, as we marked the one year anniversary of his detention, Rama and I were honored to welcome Mahmoud, Noor, and their son Deen to Gracie Mansion to break our fast together. Mahmoud is a New Yorker, and he belongs in New York City.
In a dining room, five people eat, chat and smile around a table of food.
Iftar, Day 19
βThe world that Trump and his acolytes have said they want to build, in fact, bears many striking resemblances to the unbearable policing that happened under apartheid. But the message from the vast majority of South Africans to people in the US is: you wonβt like it.β

sadly, having a sense of humour is taboo in germany and jokes are considered a social faux pas. the small number of funny germans are forced to make jokes only in private
fair enough.
(not accusing you of supporting the death penalty or of any other such things which are obviously not true)
or have I misunderstood?
plenty of reasons not to love the rule, yes... but you seem to believe that in this case it got the right outcome in *both* a legal sense (properly convicted per the rules) and in a colloquial/moral sense of direct culpability.
If one accepts both, in what sense is one objecting to FM?
also people should realise that match bans as a punishment for things that someone says are very rare *for players*. the vast vast majority of bans for speech are for racist, homophobic, etc comments, either on the field or online.
This is intentional destruction of spaces of freedom of expression and gathering, of local businesses supporting each other, and of an industry that refuses genAI & occupies the knowledge & creative spaces that the auto-correct machine wants to take over.
other pedants will note that obviously a screenshot doesn't really constitute 'reminding'
I'm also a bit surprised Rodri got off so lightly, but pedantry compels me to remind this Arsenal fan that in the incident he is describing Wenger was initially accused of "violent and threatening behaviour" after allegedly shoving a referee. And in the end he got no ban, and a 10K fine.
Youβd think in this era of βMPs face increasing dangerβ there would be more outrage at newly elected Green MP Hannah Spencer being assaulted by transphobes but itβs nowhere to be seen on BBC News app even if you search her name
A good time to read @lalehkhalili.bsky.social's book 'Sinews of War and Trade: Shipping and Capitalism in the Arabian Peninsula'.
Or if you don't have time to do that, how about the review-essay I wrote about the book on my Substack during a previous war-related shipping crisis:
I said this when Ian Watkins was murdered and the same principle applies
City's charges (and for some, City in general) are a convenient avatar for the decades-long multitude of problems in football governance. Some people want an easy villain
makes me think of @hofrench.bsky.social book Born in Blackness about how West Africa was tied into global circuits from the 15th century onwards. Cape Verde and that region was such a fulcrum
More than a year ago I argued @foreignpolicy.com that German government has to open there eyes to what policies they are supporting by delivering weapons to Israel & why they should change their Israel policy. Unfortunately nothing has changed & my artguments still apply so reposting my piece again:
Yeh, even if the article isnt really like the headline seems to promise, the use of the headline itself is alarming
also embarrassing for the Guardian. Who edited the piece and did that line not stick out to them? comment is free but facts after all are sacred
Check your MP against the list of names and if they haven't signed, contact them and ask them to do so.
(Jeff Smith has signed it, in case you're from Manchester Withington)
he's also seemingly incapable of thinking for himself without a brief. Someone told him "say this" and he did so
I'm not trying to be facetious. I just ignore the vast majority of comment on football
see to me I don't especially see any response to PSG winning the CL, because I simply don't care to read about it
