A mama owl sits non her eggs, back in a shallow erosional hole in the side of a cliff (which is, interestingly, is owl-shaped!) She's the same color as the dirt, and only the sun hitting her feathers alerted me to her being inside.

Hello, there beautiful mama great-horned #owl in the rock cliff. I'd NEVER have seen her if not for the sun illuminating her feathers. She's sitting on eggs! (taken with zoom!)

I visited one of the local steppes near to Pinoso and was pleased to see some early Lesser Kestrels back already (7). What stunning little raptors. They were busy wizzing around displaying and showing off to the females. #birds #birding #birdsseenin2026 #naturephotography

I had to check out who was around last year on March 9. It was wet and the birds were hopping around under a feeder. The Sparrows are the same and a Brown Thrasher and Eastern Towhee came closer than they have lately. Through the DirtyWindowFilter™️ 🪶

A downy woodpecker is hanging on a suet feeder to eat

Its 80°F and the maple tree keys are way ahead of this day last year. The birds will enjoy having leaves to hide behind again. 🪶

Let’s talk neonicotinoids. These deadly pesticides are so widespread that they are exposing native pollinators and birds to a lot of poison. They’re likely present in any big box retail that sells garden plants. Please use organic local garden shops who could really use your support. ASK them too!

Earlier this year I learned that, in rare cases, Cedar Waxwings have wax on the tips of their tail feathers (the typical place is on the wing tips.) I was delighted to recently find another Cedar Waxwing that had a couple of red waxy tips on the tail feathers.
