I made the decision to wait until there's a quest that tells you to "make preparations," and then I'll go hunt until I finish my smithy wishlist and then find all of the "safe" locations for my camps. It's been a blast doing it that way. Also using SnS, C. Blade, Hammer, and Dual Blades.
