TRIPTYCH

A boy keeps a dead bird like pride covers shame.
A dead bird keeps to its shoebox like a boy holds it tongue.

A shoebox hides in a boy like a bird’s heartbeat beneath feathers.
A feather hides its bird like blood cuts a boy’s words.

A boy is a bird flapping against the sides of a shoebox.
A dead boy is an uncovered shoebox, filled with a light too bright.

Monday’s tragedies in Capitol Hill are heartbreaking. One life has already been lost, and another person is recovering from being struck while simply walking in their own neighborhood. My heart is with the victims, their families, and everyone who is grieving.

Seattle controls street design and signal timing within city limits, and I strongly support bold city action to reduce preventable traffic deaths. But traffic violence is also a regional public health crisis. King County cannot sit on the sidelines. Through Metro Transit, Public Health, and our budget authority, the County has real tools to improve safety around bus stops and transit hubs, invest in data driven prevention, and prioritize pedestrian protections in the transportation funding we distribute. We can strengthen countywide safety standards on roads we control and push for statewide reforms that protect people walking, biking, and riding transit.

No family should lose a loved one to a crash that could have been prevented. This is about designing a transportation system that values human life above convenience. At every level of government, we have a responsibility to act with urgency and align our policies with that simple truth.

The one-hundred-year anniversary of Seattle's oldest known gay bar is three years away -- I don't think every old building needs to be frozen in amber, but at the very least, sites like these should get plaques before they vanish altogether.

When submitting poetry, has anyone else been asked to "irrevocably waive in their entirety any current or future exercise of 'natural rights' or 'moral rights of authors' as may potentially be asserted."

lines from "At Gautier's Grave" Robert Lowell after Victor Hugo

Yes, I listen: the great wind dies away, I feel the summit's sinister cold breath, I hurry.Do not close the gate of death, for when my friends die, I start back and see their fixed eyes draw me to infnity;
I have begun to dic by being alone,
I banished here, I who must soon be gone; ny night is breaking raguely into stars, my too long thread thrills, quivers for the shears!

For Anyone Holding Their Breath

this is a love poem
for all boys

who have never been told
they were beautiful

for people who do not know
they smile in their sleep

for the adult children who can’t call home

this is a page
in a story that places bets
on the weight on bobcats

heavy handed with a softness
each pound a metaphor for

you are not alone

I want to tell you
in the same century grief
was first spoken
so was breviary

a word for hymn

and this is a truth,
god honest

some of us
have applied for the vacancy
of being alive
since before we were born

our resumes
half spent lifetimes
never making it to the top
even if we stopped ourselves from being
propelled by everything that hates us

I do not know who interviewed you
but in that round,
the one where you painted yourself a crisis
someone should have told you

the job responsibilities
were never to hold it all in
