No, “AI” is not a Stochastic Parrot 🦜
I’ve recently come across a new flavor of AI denialism making the rounds.
"AI" is not a stochastic parrot.🦜
I wrote this piece a couple weeks ago, but it was hard for me to finish up given AI's role in society and war over the past few weeks. I should share it at some point though. Not perfect, but here it is.

Anthropic’s Lawsuit Should Absolutely Destroy the Pentagon in Court
But make no mistake: The company is not one of the good guys.
I don't think enough people are paying attention to Anthropic's lawsuit against the DoD. Hegseth wants Terminators, while Anthropic just doesn't want Claude to pull the trigger (probably for liability reasons). Dystopia is already here.

The whole "Resolution 2" in the linked document below is worth reading.

Relatedly: I hate HATE the bastardization of the term *democratization* by neoliberals, particularly those in computing, to mean "you can buy/rent this for cheaper than you use to". 🤬

Grammarly Is Offering ‘Expert’ AI Reviews From Your Favorite Authors—Dead or Alive
The tool, offered by the recently-rebranded company Superhuman, gives feedback based on the work of famous dead and living writers—without their permission.
“Instead of producing what looks like a generic critique from a nameless LLM,” Wired reported last week, Expert Review “lists a number of real academics and authors available to weigh in on your text. To be clear: Those people have nothing to do with this process.”🤬

Definitely worth remembering the environmental damage the railroad booms & busts did to American west in the late 19th century when looking to what we allow above our heads.

Could this shared tendency-toward predictable disaster and genuine ignorance-be a
coincidence? History suggests not. The technology of the global supply chain echoes the technology of machine learning because the two have a surprising amount in common, from
the assumptions they share about the way the world works to their tortured relationship to
interior visibility. In both cases, technologists who dream of self-governing systems have
accepted-even embraced—a persistent opacity at the heart of the mechanisms they've
designed.
Here’s what I say.

A chart showing how the relative sizes of federal grant funding in the US, with arts and humanities getting an infinitesimal portion.
To offer some context, here's a graphic our fabulous intern Aidan Nuttall put together in 2023.
When we compared our per capita humanities research funding against 42 other countries, there was only a single country that spent less (South Africa), and most countries spent 10x-250x more.
