a snippet of a mini-comic, at top - straight line stretches from point A to B. Immediately below, same dot at A, then becomes a curving, meandering line that winds through the page and ends at a point with rays and a question mark emanating from it. Text reads: "Nothing can do this for you - for that robs you of experience and conflates answers with learning. Rather, it's all the decisions you make along the way, the mistakes, struggles, and surprises! These pathways you create - this is learning. https://spinweaveandcut.com/fall-2025-syllabi/

This latest study would be a great reason for people like @petebuttigieg.bsky.social and @govpressoffice.gov.ca.gov and everyone else arguing against trans inclusion in sports to change position and prove theyβre not just being phobic or pandering to the center www.iflscience.com/review-of-52...

Should biology put complexity first? www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... - excellent essay by @philipcball.bsky.social. I would add epistasis to polygenicity and pleiotropy as a ubiquitous and fundamental phenomenon, not some optional complication that we can try to account for afterwards
βScience has always claimed to study the future. Indigenous peoples have always planned for it,β Tsosie says. βWe are at a turning point in genomics, AI and precision health. The question is not what we can build, but who science is built for.β
Let's get this hashtag started! The 2026 Santa Cruz Developmental Biology Meeting is happen this August! We will share updates using #SCDB26.

A cherry cordial center for a semi-spherical chocolate runs out on a white background. The cherry occupies some of the space, but most was clearly liquid.
Chocolates with liquid centers are made by adding a yeast-derived enzyme, INVERTASE, to fondant or semi-solid sugar sludge, which breaks disaccharide sucrose into fructose and glucose which are more soluble in water.
These fillings have to age for several days to be fully converted.

We should also note that these vaccines were limited to the most vulnerable populations or not approved at all due to these rare side effects (1 in 200,000). And now this detective work will help ensure future vaccines are even safer. Truly important work!
Ilia Malinin legally landed a backflip on one blade at the Olympics, but letβs not forget Surya Bonaly did it FIRST in 1998, knowing sheβd be penalized. Her courage broke barriers in a sport that wasnβt ready. Black athletes set the tone. Letβs honor them accordingly. βπΏ
βWe reach for [these tools] because our world is asking for altogether too much: too much work without the time to do it well, too much caregiving without the community infrastructure to support it, and too much pressure to perform academically without the foundational skills to make it possible.β

In December, I told you about how Trumpβs Department of Education is stripping nurses of our professional status and making school more expensive.
From now until March 2, we need you to raise your voice and submit a public comment: www.federalregister.gov/documents/20...
White people are putting Mexican flag stickers on their cars to get pulled over and waste ICE's time.
They call it "ICE fishing."
Today I'd like to honor the memory of my mentor and friend, Roger Tsien, born 1952 February 1. Today would have been Roger's 74th birthday.
Most know Roger for his 2008 Chemistry Nobel Prize with Shimomura and Chalfie. Roger made GFP into the versatile imaging method it is now.

The largest nurses' union is calling for the abolition of ICE and pledges to work to vote out any official who votes to fund them.
I donβt want to hear anything from an elected official unless itβs a plan to defund the DHS and impeach Noem, Bovino, etc. No texts. No emails. No talk about the economy. Step up or step off.
Alex Pretti, wearing a green sweater with his VA badge on.
This is Alex Pretti.
This morning he was murdered by ICE. Six ICE agents held him down and shot him at point blank range. Alex was a nurse and researcher at the VA.
Our thoughts are with his loved ones and we stand united in action calling for the abolishment of ICE.

Regardless of your field, this is a great interview for academics to read and digest: @bgmerkle.bsky.social on the history and conventions around scholarly writing, the paucity of instruction in it, and the ways in which we can improve this area of graduate education.

The cover of a soon-to-publish book called: "The Best Science Stories and How They Work: A Collection with Commentary". The book cover is white, with a light blue strip across the middle horizontally. Within the blue strip are pinkish-red circles that spiral into the background, and the circles contain bits of text like clippings from a newspaper or text. The book says that it is edited by Siri Carpenter and lists a number of contributors who provided original pieces and annotations.
Coming June 2026, The Open Notebook will publish a brand new book, edited by @siricarpenter.bsky.social, and today we are absolutely THRILLED to share the cover!

Unions and community orgs are calling for a Minnesota-wide shutdown in 10 days to protest the ferocious assault by federal immigration agents. They're saying on Jan 23, no work, no school, no shopping. SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, & others are supporting, w/ more to join. By me, Amie Stager
Probably the best endorsement I can give of this book is that I read the whole thing today after it showed up. This is a must read for educators. But here are a few things I really liked about it. π§΅
