Good morning! I made it to 1500 days of Checklist streak! π
bird people - what are some cool recent papers on migration?
(picking a paper for migration discussion in Ornithology class, I have some candidates but curious to broaden my options)
I had never thought about recording units picking up wing beats of Birds...I wonder how that works out when you're trying to record migratory birds but huge flock of blackbirds just fly through confounding the bird calls!
Crazy!

RΓΌppel et al. 2026 - "movetrack: An R package to model flight paths from radio-telemetry networks"
-> this makes it possible to transform station-based radiotelemetry data into actual flight path, validated with a plane flight.

This is one of the best location in the state to see them! Can't wait to head out there starting next week..I am bad at estimating flocks like this...but a few years ago, I saw a flock that covered the whole sky!

Medium sized chicken-like bird with brown mottled plumage standing amongst rocks and shrub. A male is pictured showcasing a bright yellow air sac located on the side of the neck. It also has bright yellow feathers above their eye and a fanned turkey-like tail that has dark brown feathers with white tips.
Meet the Sooty Grouse, a forest dwelling, chicken-like charmer of the PNW! Pictured here is the male, in spring, they puff bright yellow air sacs, hoot dramatically, and strut to impress camouflaged females.

With colleagues across ornithological societies and led by Nathan #Thayer, Ashley #Dayer, and Dai #Shizuka, I'm happy to share this first publication from some collaborative research we began in 2022 to study the role of #belonging in #ornithology: lnkd.in/gYGQzHer.

Meme showing hot peppers saying "evolution can you give me capsaicin to deter mammals? I want birds to spread my seeds?" Evolution, rendered as a DNA double helix, asks "to deter mammals?" and the peppers reply "yes, to deter mammals, that is precisely what I said." Then it shows two cavemen excitedly yelling "mouth hot" at some peppers, to which the peppers say "wait what the fuck?" and the final image is a bunch of hot sauces and dishes, again captioned "what the fuck?"
It's one of my favorite topics to teach in sensory physiology-- how plants likely evolved capsaicin as a deterrent to keep us from eating them and that didn't work out so great for them (or did, since we now lovingly grow and cultivate them):
In case you missed it: For Audubon, I wrote about some new research putting together the cascade of ecological events that leads to salmonella outbreaks at urban birdfeeders. πͺΆ www.audubon.org/magazine/sur...

One of the 6 warblers I need to complete my US warblers!
There are only about 100 Black-tailed Godwits breeding in England.
Many of these 'limosa' birds have been to Africa for the winter.
