4) the bad stuff: i am furious that some artists were put outside of artist alley in a weird spot. sales were dismal for them and i think they should be refunded AT MINIMUM bc they paid for AA tables, not some random other fuckin thing okay 🤝 this is NOT acceptable @emeraldcitycon.bsky.social

ECCC thoughts! a thread:

1) i had a great weekend!! good meals with good friends, new friends, friends i've never met before in person, got to see old friends i haven't seen in ages. i just wish i'd been able to get out to see more folks on sunday 😭

2) quality of interactions was mostly A+!!

I think it'd be cool if we had a larger discussion on the direction of conventions in NA- how expensive they are, how little artists make back, how much artists have to put in to even get accepted- And let's not forget how ridiculous the expectations are for presentation and merchandise with tables.

You do NOT have to compare them to another more well established artist.

I do not expect everyone who comes to my table to buy something. You don’t gotta tell the creators you have no money, they also have no money. You can just make eye contact, tell them you really like their work and subscribe to their newsletter. That goes a long long way!

It’s likely the artist behind that ECCC table paid at least

$450 for the table
$500-700 for lodging
$150 (+) for food/drink
$300+ for merch.

The financial risk is real! Be nice to the creators behind the table and even if you don’t got the $$ to spare, a kind word goes a long way.

We aren’t guests. At most of these conventions. We’re customers.

I do very few shows each year, and usually one or two will comp me a table - but nothing else.

Cons ALWAYS are a money loss for me.

I only do it to reconnect with folks and promote books.
