Nausicaa in the Toxic Jungle staring at a pair of giant Ohmu. The jungle is dark and ancient, giant fungi towering up into the canopy and blotting out the sun. The only light is a patch of small blooming fungi that the Ohmu are walking through, lighting them in warm light from beneath. Various other giant insects roam the jungle, some flying above and others skittering across the trunks of trees.

Studio Ghibli have released the March issue of their monthly magazine Neppu, with a feature on Princess Mononoke and coexistence with wild animals.
Upsets in both semi finals! My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service progress to the 2026 final!
While the connection between its different incarnations isn't quite as obvious as something like the susuwatari, Yakul stands out as one of the few recurring Ghibli characters. Yakul's apperances show the lasting importance of the ideas Miyazaki explored in the early 80s. [9/9]
When his son Goro later did adapt Earthsea, the film ended up borrowing various elements of its story and aesthetics from Shuna's Journey. That included giving the protagonist Arren a steed reminiscent of the Yakul creatures from the manga. [8/9]
When he was working on those other projects, Miyazaki was also interested in adapting Ursula K Le Guin's Earthsea novels, but he was never given permission. He imagined his Earthsea adaptation would be something like Shuna's Journey. [7/9]
Nausicaรค of the Valley of the Wind (้ขจใฎ่ฐทใฎใใฆใทใซ) was another of Miyazaki's early-1980s projects. A Yakul-like animal also features in the Nausicaรค manga: a creature called Kest aids the Master of the Garden later in the story and can communicate with humans. [6/9]
It's not surprising that Princess Mononoke resembles Shuna's Journey, since Miyazaki began planning it at a similar time - though the earliest version of Princess Mononoke is quite unlike the film version. That was a period when he was working on many different ideas around the same time. [5/9]
Ashitaka has a few things in common with Shuna as a hero, and when he travels to the west just like Shuna, he too brings Yakul as his steed. We see that Yakul is agile and can swim, as well as being a loyal companion that refuses to leave Ashitaka even when injured. [4/9]
The Yakul in Princess Mononoke (ใใฎใฎใๅงซ) - where it appears to be the name of the particular individual - is visually very similar to the ones in Shuna's Journey. It's supposed to be one of a fictional extinct species of serow, a woodland goat-antelope. [3/9]
Shuna's Journey (ใทใฅใใฎๆ ) is where we see the earliest appearance of a creature called "Yakul". The word is used as the name of a species of deer/ibex-like animal, one of which the protagonist rides during his adventure in a Central Asia-inspired mountainous setting. [2/9]
