"The arts are not a luxury good. They are a fundamental asset to any city or community," writes SΓ©bastien Labelle.
"The arts should not be treated as just an expense, but rather as an investment that yields strong returns, and can actually help fight a budgetary deficit."

When I give talks about the exploitation of GLAM by the AI industry Iβm always asked βhow can we defend ourselves from bots scraping our metadata?β I have no idea. Thatβs a question for an engineer. What I can and do say is that we shouldnβt be supporting this industry in the first place.

More on archives. Recent cuts to public archives in Canada, and other countries, by governments, may seem inconsequential in light of recent world events, but they serve a purpose, allowing the state to control its past, erase βinconvenientβ histories, set new myths in place: In May 1933, Nazi-led student groups organized public burnings of βun-Germanβ books, including those held in the library of the Institute for Sexual Science.

βA.I. chatbots contain the sum of all human knowledgeβ is so egregiously wrong that I donβt know what to say.
Chatbots have been trained on corpus of digital(ised) text - ABSOLUTELY NOT the sum of all human knowledge. Paper, experience, embodiment, oral tales all missing.

We also need to know whether AI was used to select the target. WaPo is reporting Anthropic and Palantir tech were used to identify 1000 targets in Iran 24 hours. Who vetted those targets? Who pays for errors? It's possible they weren't involved in this strike but this we need to know.

"As a species, the challenges we face now are much more acute than those we faced ten years ago. Unspeakably, tragically, and needlessly more acute. This makes the work that we're doing here today, and that the Climate Museum does, all the more urgent." - Climate Museum founding director Miranda Massie
What role do culture and museums play in tackling the climate crisis? It was an honour to explore this question and more with the Climate Museum's founding Director, Miranda Massie, in our latest interview for Cultural Trends. Gift link below! ππ»

Israeli map showing all of southern Lebanon in red with yellow arrows pointing to north of the Litani river
The IDF just ordered the *entirety of south Lebanon* to be forcibly displaced.
They are emptying the land of its population, creating a massive crisis, and will now proceed to further annihilate large parts of Lebanon.
The very nation state of Lebanon is being destroyed.

IDF: Israel has the right to defend itself.
Number of students killed in Israeli attack on school in southern Iran rises to 24
We have reported earlier that an Israeli strike hit an elementary girlβs school in Minab, a city in the Hormozgan province of southern Iran, killing five people.
Now, Iranβs Fars news agency is reporting that the number of students killed rose to 24.
Unimaginably depraved.
