MTV was at its peak importance for me in 86-89 or so precisely at this time of year, when I’d spend all day checking in on the year’s top 100 videos countdown. for better or worse, it was basically my pop culture super bowl.

Sounds like your town sucks. Don't wish for the downfall of theaters for everyone else because of that. If you told me in 1990 that theaters had recliners, showed films in 4 different formats, blasted sound in insane surround, and sold you beer, I would have thought paradise was on the way.
