I also wonder how much "critical reappraisals" are accomplished through sheer attrition? At some point all of the members of a "critical consensus" are dis/replaced by people who are simply younger and appreciated these movies differently.

I generally have simply not read a lot of contemporaneous reviews/crit of a lot of movies that came out +/- 10 years from when I was born and when I come across them I'm often surprised to learn people begrudgingly liked them?
