The simulations were able to resolve climate with local granularity, particularly mesoscale activity. Additionally, the time-slice/transient protocol introduces a significant reduction in computational cost and memory footprint in comparison to regular transient simulations.

The authors used the AWI inhouse developed model, AWI-CM3, with an iterative methodology to assess the sensitivity of future climate change projections to ultra-high resolution. The insights gained more than justified the substantial investment in both human and technical resources.

The authors uses our FESOM2 model with tidal mixing parameterization to derive present-day and LGM quasi-equilibrium simulations. They focus on the Atlantic to derive their analyses and find that sea ice production and mixing rates play an essetial role in AABW strenghtening during LGM!

The AABW is essential for the global ocean ventilation as it travels from the bottom of the Southern Ocean to the other ocean basins! During LGM, its formation is deemed to be amplified, even though the magnitude and mechanisms driving AABW strengthrening are under debate.
